Hertha Berlin come up against Bundesliga opposition in the DFB Pokal on Wednesday, as they look to reach the third round of the competition. Mainz will be narrow favourites in the betting, but can they reach the next round of the German competition?
It hasn’t been an easy period for Hertha Berlin over recent seasons, as they were relegated to the second tier at the conclusion of the previous Bundesliga campaign. Life in the second tier hasn’t gone as many would have expected, as they already sit down in ninth after suffering six defeats from their opening eleven matches.
Their inconsistency has been clear for all to see this term, evident from the fact that they have won three and lost twice over their last five matches in 2. Bundesliga. Hertha have reached the DFB Pokal final on three previous occasions, but they are yet to land a maiden win. Hertha were excellent in the opening round, as they landed a 5-0 away win against Carl Zeiss Jena in the middle of August.
Mainz could yet join Hertha in the second tier next season, as they have started the new campaign in really disappointing form. The German side’s best performance in the DFB Pokal came in 2009, as they reached the final four before ultimately being eliminated.
Mainz currently sit bottom of the Bundesliga standings after going their opening nine matches without picking up a victory. They have scored just nine goals, and have allowed 24 already this term. They needed to be at their very best in the opening round, with Ludovic Ajorque netting the winner against SV Elversberg.
Mainz have an excellent record in this fixture, as they have gone eight without defeat against Hertha. However, four of the previous six have ended in draws, with 1-1 ties being played out on three occasions. Both meetings in the Bundesliga last term ended with the same scoreline.
Neither of these sides have yet put together a solid performance this term, meaning that it could easily be a fixture that goes either way. Therefore, a chance will be taken on the hosts to land a famous win and reach the third round of the competition.
