The German national team’s huge summer of action gets underway on Monday as they play one of their final matches before their home European Championships. Julian Nagelsmann has put an end to long-term questions surrounding his future, which will only help Germany’s chances of delivering a fourth EURO success.
Performances have improved since the start of 2024, with four goals scored in wins against France and the Netherlands. That would have been reason for optimism about their EURO chances after losing five of their nine internationals in 2023. But a passionate German support will expect wins in their final two warm-up matches.
Recent Form (all competitions, most recent first) | W W L L D |
Key Players to Watch | Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Kai Havertz |
Team Strengths | Creating chances in the final third |
Team Weaknesses | Lack of clinical finishers in the number nine position |
Ukraine will be gearing up for their EURO 2024 campaign with three warm-up matches across the next eight days. Their recent form could make them an interesting challenger to make it out of their group stage campaign, with Belgium, Slovakia, and Romania drawn alongside them in Group E.
Serhiy Rebrov’s team come into this critical period of their preparation in fine recent form after winning each of their last two, and five of their last six internationals.
They are also unbeaten in all internationals since June of last year, including creditable draws against both England and Italy. That recent form could make them an interesting selection when making a Germany vs Ukraine prediction, especially considering that the home team could test out new tactics ahead of their EURO opener against Scotland.
Bet hereRecent Form (all competitions, most recent first) | W W D W W |
Key Players to Watch | Oleksandr Zinchenko, Artem Dovbyk, Mykhailo Mudryk |
Team Strengths | Ukraine are strong defensively, conceding just two goals in their last four internationals. |
Team Weaknesses | Can often find it testing to kill off games, winning by one-goal margins in four international matches since June last year. |
It is important to assess the head-to-head record before making a Germany vs Ukraine prediction. Ukraine are winless in their previous nine matches against their rivals, but they did end a three-game losing sequence in a 3-3 draw in June 2023.
Interestingly, two matches since the start of 2011 have ended by the same scoreline. However, Germany have won three of the four matches since June 2016.
Florian Wirtz will be an essential player for Germany this summer. The attacking midfielder comes into the important summer of matches after enjoying a stunning campaign with Bayer Leverkusen, which ended with the 21-year-old picking up the player of the season.
Wirtz enjoyed a career-best scoring season for Leverkusen last term, netting 18 goals in all competitions and registering 18 assists.
Much of Ukraine’s threat will come on the left-hand side, with Mykhailo Mudryk looking to build on a strong finish to the 2023-24 season with Chelsea. The 23-year-old scored seven goals last term, which included five in the Premier League. He has also netted once in two international matches for his nation this calendar year.
Nagelsmann has managed to get the best out of his German side since reverting to a 4-2-3-1 formation. This system enables Musiala and Wirtz to wander freely in the final third of the field, with Kai Havertz typically dropping deeper to enable İlkay Gündoğan to move into attacking positions. However, they could be vulnerable on the counter-attack, with Robin Andrich likely needing to stay deeper to counteract that threat.
Ukraine will continue to keep faith with their 4-3-3 setup throughout this summer, with Zinchenko playing a key role in the middle of the park. But, they are unlikely to dominate possession against this German side, meaning that they will need to be expansive when they get hold of the ball.
Despite being a warm-up fixture, there will be pressure on Germany to set their tone for the EUROs on Monday. Nagelsmann will play a near full-strength side, with Toni Kroos and Antonio Rüdiger likely to be the only stars missing.
A Germany win will be a popular football pick, but we struggle to see them keeping a clean sheet. Nagelsmann’s team has managed to keep one shutout in their last eleven international matches.
Just as he has been for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal throughout 2023-24, Kai Havertz will be vital for Germany this summer. The 24-year-old is often a divisive player, but his scoring record for his national team is consistent after netting 15 in 44 matches.
Havertz also enjoyed an excellent end to the season with Arsenal, and concluded 2023-24 campaign with 14 goals in 51 matches. He will get his chances with the quality of attacking midfielders behind him, and we would expect him to be among the value football predictions in this friendly.
