The French national team managed to make it to the gold medal game, dropping just one match to the Germans, with Victor Wembanyama leading the team in all statistical categories. However, it’s not just Wemby. France’s overall talent has been able to steamroll the majority of teams, as Team France has 4 NBA players on their starting 5.
The twin towers of Wemby and Gobert have smothered most offences while Evan Fournier and others pestered up at the perimeter. That being said, the French national team has their work cut out for them against Team USA, as they’ll really be gunning for that gold.
After being down until the fourth quarter against the Serbians, where Team USA managed to come back, the Americans will likely be looking to redeem themselves. Anthony Edwards will likely have a solid game with the mediocre perimeter defence along with Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry.
Down low, Team USA will have some more struggles as Team France is huge, with multiple 7-footers alongside Rudy Gobert and Wemby holding down the key. In all likelihood, Team USA will probably try to take advantage of their shooting instead of attacking the basket.
Bet hereTeam USA will likely come out swinging in the first quarter as they won’t want to play from behind as they did against the Serbians. Instead of having a fantastic fourth quarter, Team USA’s shooters will be firing from the get-go to hopefully spread the floor and free up the paint.
Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert will likely stick to tier guns, playing a “twin towers” style of defence until the American’s force them to switch their playstyle.
On the offensive side of the ball, the French should have a decent time, as Wemby will take a ton of pressure off while Rudy Gobert forces them to pay attention to the low post. The Americans will really have to pick their poison, rather than allowing shots or getting destroyed by quick dumps and pick-and-roll plays.
However, Team USA should still have an overall advantage, as their roster is simply too deep. The Americans just need to make sure they don’t have an off-shooting night, because that could spell the end of them.
Victor Wembanyama is easily one of the most electrifying young athletes in the world, with the potential to become an all-time great. His scoring output is great enough during the NBA season, let alone when he’s playing for his country with a decent usage rate.
Wemby should have the ball in his hands a decent amount, putting up tons of shots both from beyond the arch and down low. And while he may get bodied by the likes of Anthony Davis and Joel Embiid, Rudy Gobert is right there to take the pressure off.
Moreover, seeing as it’s the gold medal game and a real chance for Wemby to separate himself, he’ll likely be playing at 110%. With his scoring ability and desire to win, 16 points isn’t really a stretch, especially considering he’s been averaging 13.8 throughout the Olympics.
