Fluminense vs Borussia Dortmund Preview and Team News

Fluminense Team News

Fluminense arrive in the USA just a few days before kick-off, having announced their 31-man squad on 6 June for the Club World Cup. The Rio de Janeiro side are in strong domestic form, just four points off the Brasileirão lead after 11 games. Their most recent match was a 2-0 away win against Internacional on 1 June.

Prior to that, they beat Once Caldas 2-0 in the Copa Sudamericana, and won 2-1 over Vasco da Gama.

Renato Gaucho (Portaluppi) took charge of Fluminense early in April, stepping in after Mano Menezes. His approach is based on what can be called “functional play,” defined by short passing combinations, close player proximity, and purposeful overloads in midfield. By crowding certain areas of the pitch, the squad create numerical superiority that stretches opposing defences and opens channels for penetration.

This use of overload, particularly during buildup phases in midfield, has become a defining element of Gaúcho`s system.

Fluminense frequently look to regain possession high up the pitch, but always in a calculated manner that avoids reckless commitment.

Once possession is secured, the forward unit, often featuring Arias, Ganso, Everaldo, and Serna, operates with high-speed vertical transitions rather than prolonged spells of slow buildup. This quick, direct method destabilizes defensive lines and creates scoring threats.

Fluminense are coping with several absences: Keno and Otávio remain sidelined. Winger Agustín Canobbio is nursing a head injury, and Facundo Bernal has a thigh issue, both expected back mid‑June.

Borussia Dortmund Team News

Dortmund closed the Bundesliga campaign with six consecutive wins, an emphatic 4-2 away victory at Leverkusen, and a 3-0 home success over Kiel. Borussia ended the season in powerful form to secure Champions League qualification.

Niko Kovač, appointed in February, reshaped a faltering side, initially 11th, to finish fourth.

Kovač`s Dortmund transitioned from total vulnerability under Terzić and Şahin into a hard-working, more organized unit. A functional 3‑4‑2‑1 is their default: wingbacks provide width, and midfielders Groß, Nmecha, or Sabitzer provide progression of the ball and defensive balance.

Guirassy, as a target man, holds play while the two behind, Brandt and Adeyemi, link dynamically. Dortmund`s late-season resurgence demonstrated improved situational pressing and efficient transitions, especially when they defeated Wolfsburg 4-0.

They`ll be without Nico Schlotterbeck for the tournament due to a torn meniscus sustained in April. They’ve also lost Salih Ozkan; Emre Can is doubtful.

Jamie Gittens is fully fit and included in Borussia Dortmund’s 28-man squad for the Club World Cup, despite a frustrated moment captured at training following a collapsed Chelsea transfer attempt.

He underwent hand surgery in late March but returned to full fitness for the final Bundesliga game of the season and was consistently part of the matchday squad under Kovač. Currently, with no new injury reports and being registered for the competition, he’s available and should feature against Fluminense on 17 June.

Fluminense vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction

  • Pick: Borussia Dortmund to win
  • Odds: 1.52 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Fluminense 1-2 Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund have a deeper squad and higher-quality defensive players.

It’s tricky to assess how prepared Fluminense will be for the high-intensity play the German club typically bring in the Bundesliga. Thiago Silva is already 40 years old and may struggle to keep up with Dortmund’s pacey attackers.

Considering the home squad’s excellent form at the end of the season and the presence of top young talents in all positions, it’s reasonable to expect the German side to win this match.

Fluminense vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Both teams to score
  • Odds: 1.76 (22Bet)

Renato Portaluppi’s team are quite capable of creating problems for opponents through quick transitions from defence to attack. Fluminense have scored in nine out of their last eleven meetings, demonstrating impressive attacking potential.

Borussia Dortmund have also netted in 9 of their previous 11, but they’ve conceded two in three of their last five. This suggests that it’s reasonable to expect both teams to find the net.
