Fluminense vs Al-Hilal Preview and Team News

Fluminense Team News

Fluminense are arguably one of the most intriguing teams to watch in this tournament.

The Brazilian club have managed to keep clean sheets against the highly potent attacks of Borussia Dortmund (0-0), Mamelodi Sundowns (0-0), and most impressively, Inter Milan (2-0). However, these scorelines do not tell the full story.

In each of those matches, Tricolor allowed many clear-cut chances. Their defensive structure, while organised, relied on saves from goalkeeper Fábio and a considerable amount of good fortune. Therefore, it’s fair to say that luck played a significant role in Fluminense’s progression to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, what Fluminense may lack in defensive solidity, they more than compensate for with their breathtaking attack.

They were devastating in transition in all these matches and could have scored even more goals against Milan. The Brazilians are capable of instant transitions from defence to attack, thanks to the fantastic understanding between their players and the technical quality of their forwards.

This was perfectly demonstrated by their 2-0 victory over Inter. Coach Renato Portaluppi deployed a surprise 3-5-2 formation, a strategic formation that neutralised the Italian side’s own system.

Despite enormous pressure, they consistently threatened with counterattacks, which ultimately proved decisive.

The squad’s strength is not limited to vertical, fast offence. Portaluppi’s men can also conduct slow, positional attacks, creating overloads in the centre or half-spaces.

They use combinations that methodically break down opposing defences.

Jhon Arias is the team’s star at this tournament. The Colombian winger beats opponents with his dribbling, delivers precise passes for his partners to shoot, and regularly tests the opposition goalkeeper himself.

The most intriguing question is how Fluminense will react if they concede first and are forced to break down a deep-lying Al-Hilal defence.

Midfielder Martinelli is a doubt after picking up a knock against Milan, which may force a midfield reshuffle.

Fluminense predicted lineup vs Al-Hilal (3-5-2): Fábio; Thiago Silva, Ignacio, Freytes; Xavier, Bernal, Rene, Lima, Hercules; Arias, Cano.

Al-Hilal Team News

Al-Hilal are one of the most underrated teams in the tournament, yet they possess the potential to reach the very latest stages.

The Saudi side have a formidable squad, and under the guidance of Simone Inzaghi, they’ve transformed into a tactical unit.

Inzaghi’s men have already drawn with Real Madrid 1-1 and defeated Man City 4-3 in a dramatic extra-time thriller. These results were built on a solid foundation shown in their 2-0 victory over Pachuca and a 0-0 tie with Salzburg, a match in which the Saudi club created the better chances.

In the meeting with Manchester, Al-Hilal initially attempted to play in a very defensive 5-4-1 low block in the first half. This strategy saw them concede numerous chances and go a goal down.

However, Inzaghi is a master of in-game adjustments. In the second half, he changed the strategy. His squad began launching regular attacks, taking advantage of the narrow positioning of City’s players through the flanks.

This switch in tactics, and their outstanding execution on set-pieces and clinical counter-attacking, allowed Blue Waves to knock out one of the tournament favourites.

Former Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine “Bono” Bounou is the star of Al-Hilal, especially after his fantastic performance against Manchester. He made a series of world-class saves to keep his team in the game. In attack, Malcom is a standout player with the quality to thrive at a top European side, considering his stunning dribbling and ability to finish chances.

João Cancelo also excelled in this tournament, especially when facing his former club, Man City. He used the space on the right flank to initiate and finish attacks. The brace from striker Marcos Leonardo and the extra-time winner have proven him to be a new star.

The primary concern for Al-Hilal is the absence of their winger, Salem Al-Dawsari, who is out with a hamstring injury. His creativity and goal threat are a significant loss. Also missing is striker Aleksandar Mitrović, sidelined by a calf problem.

If Al-Hilal can continue to tactically exploit their opponents’ weaknesses, they have a good chance of finding themselves in the semi-finals.

Al-Hilal predicted lineup vs Fluminense (5-4-1): Bono; Cancelo, Koulibaly, Neves, Lodi, Al-Harbi; Milinković-Savić, Kanno, N. Al-Dawsari, Malcom; Leonardo.

Fluminense vs Al-Hilal Prediction

  • Pick: Al-Hilal Double Chance (Win or Draw)
  • Odds: 1.44 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Fluminense 1-1 Al-Hilal

The Saudi side, in a seven-goal match with Man City, demonstrated they can score against the very best clubs.

Simone Inzaghi’s flexible strategy allows them to adapt. They can concede possession before striking with speed on the counter through Malcom and Leonardo, targeting the spaces left by Fluminense’s full-backs.

Al-Hilal have already proven they’re capable of playing in two modes: attack and defence. Inzaghi’s team may be able to come back in this game if they concede first, or maintain their advantage over their opponent if they score before their rivals.

Fluminense vs Al-Hilal Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Both teams to score
  • Odds: 1.72 (22Bet)

Fluminense’s attacking philosophy, led by Arias and the predatory instincts of Cano, makes it highly probable they will score. They have the technical ability to unlock any defence.

On the other side, Al-Hilal’s performance against Manchester City was a statement of their attacking intent.

They’re not a team that will sit back for 90 minutes. With players like Malcom, Milinković-Savić, and Marcos Leonardo, they have all the necessary instruments to find the back of the net.
