Denmark vs Sweden Preview and Team News

Denmark Team News

The Danish team are preparing for this tournament with mixed feelings. A combination of calm confidence in their individual abilities and fresh, painful memories of their last performance.

Coach Andrée Jeglertz, a Swede himself, faces the huge task of lifting his team after they were dismantled 1-6 by this same Swedish side in a Nations League fixture on June 3rd.

That result was a big reality check, exposing defensive mistakes and a vulnerability to the high-speed, penetrating attacking patterns that Peter Gerhardsson’s squad have perfected.

Before that, Denmark’s form was respectable, if not convincing.

They secured their place at the finals in the qualifying campaign, but the recent run of results tells a story of inconsistency. A narrow 1-0 victory over Wales at the end of May followed a damaging 0-3 home defeat to Italy in early April. Prior to that, they showcased their quality on the road with a 2-1 success in Wales and a 3-1 victory in Italy.

The key to everything, as always, is Pernille Harder. She remains the team’s main player and one of the most intelligent forwards in the world. Fully fit and in fine form, her ability to drift between the lines, create chances, and score from nothing makes her the player Sweden will fear most.

She will likely be supported by Real Madrid’s powerful striker Signe Bruun and versatile Yani Thomsen, forming a strong attacking line.

However, the Danish defence remains the biggest question mark. The back three of Katrine Veje, Stine Ballisager, and Isabella Obaze need to be more organised than they were a month ago.

There are no new injury concerns for Denmark, meaning Jeglertz has a full-strength squad to choose from for this vital opener.

Denmark predicted lineup vs Sweden (3-4-3): Østergaard; Obaze, Ballisager, Veje; Thøgersen, Snerle, Hasbo, Holmgaard; Thomsen, Bruun, Harder.

Sweden Team News

Sweden are unbeaten in their last 12 matches and will play in Switzerland not just as group favourites, but as contenders for the title. This tournament also marks the end of an era, as long-serving manager Peter Gerhardsson will step down after his conclusion.

The squad are motivated to give him the perfect farewell gift: the first European Championship trophy since their inaugural triumph in 1984.

Their recent form is excellent. The 6-1 defeat over Denmark was the culmination of a successful run, including a confident 2-0 victory in a friendly against Norway last week.

Before that, they showed solid defensive play in a 0-0 draw away to Italy and a 1-1 tie with Wales. Their attack was on full display in a 3-2 victory over Italy in April.

The true strength of this Swedish squad lies in their forward line. Arsenal’s Stina Blackstenius is in lethal form, as her hat-trick against the Danes demonstrated. Her movement and clinical finishing make her a nightmare for defenders.

She is supported by the world-class talent of Barcelona’s Fridolina Rolfö, who operates as a winger for her country, and the pacy Johanna Rytting Kaneryd of Chelsea on the opposite flank. This trio combines speed, intelligence, and efficiency, and Denmark’s backline will have to produce a strong performance to stop them.

Sweden, without injuries, have a settled, confident squad ready to make a statement in their opening fixture.

Sweden predicted lineup vs Denmark (4-3-3): Falk; Lundqvist, Björn, Eriksson, Andersson; Angeldal, Asllani, Olme; Rytting Kaneryd, Blackstenius, Rolfö.

Denmark vs Sweden Prediction

  • Pick: Sweden to win
  • Odds: 1.54 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Denmark 1-3 Sweden

Denmark’s system can leave them vulnerable in wide areas, particularly during the transition. Sweden’s front three of Rytting Kaneryd, Blackstenius, and Rolfö are experts at dismantling that kind of space.

The key battle will be how Denmark’s wing-backs cope with the dual threat of the Swedish wingers and overlapping full-backs. If they are pinned back, the Danes’ game plan could collapse.

The psychological advantage Sweden hold after their 6-1 victory is immense. They know how they can defeat this Danish side. They will press high, play with intensity, and look to score early.

I think Denmark will be far more compact and cautious than they were in June, but Sweden’s quality should shine through.

The history between these rivals suggests goals.

Sweden’s attack is in great form. Stina Blackstenius and Fridolina Rolfö are world-class forwards who can score at any moment.

On the other hand, Denmark know they probably need a result against Sweden or Germany to advance, so sitting back may not be enough. With the creative genius of Pernille Harder leading their line, they possess the quality to hurt Peter Gerhardsson’s squad.

An early goal for either team could force the game to open up completely. Considering the attacking talent from both clubs, a choice on goals seems logical.
