A huge week of action in Group A of EURO 2024 qualification takes place this week, as Scotland could secure their place in Germany. However, Norway could remain in the fight for a top two finish if they are able to land maximum points on the road against Cyprus on Thursday.
It has been a strange EURO qualification campaign for Norway, but they remain in the hunt for a place in the top two positions. They come into the latest round of matches sitting third in the standings, but they are two points behind Spain having played a game more. Norway are also eight points off the current Group A leaders Scotland.
The nation has won just twice in their five international qualifiers this year, and they have scored just seven goals, which is only better than Georgia and Cyprus in the current standings. However, Norway kept alive their slim hopes of a qualification finish in the previous round of international matches, as Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard scored the goals in a 2-1 home win over Georgia.
It has been a qualification campaign to forget for Cyprus, as they are already unable to finish in the top two spots after losing each of their five matches in Group A. They have scored just twice in this round of qualifying, and they have allowed a Group A-high of 17 goals.
However, they could actually have a better chance than Norway of reaching the EUROs, as the nation have a playoff option to gain qualification to the tournament next summer. Cyprus have been really poor in recent months, and they come into this match having lost against Scotland and Spain in the recent international break. Across those two matches, they allowed a staggering nine goals.
Norway have a perfect record in this fixture, as they have won all 12 previous encounters between these sides. That includes a 3-1 win in the first meeting between the sides in June. Cyprus have scored just once in their last four internationals against Norway.
It is incredibly challenging to see any other result in this fixture than a victory for Norway. We expect the visitors to comfortably land maximum points on Thursday, with Erling Haaland getting among the scorers in a 4-0 win.
