Even though it’s unsaid and not marked on paper, Crystal Palace and Brighton share a bitter rivalry against each other.
Both these teams were, at best, mid-table, even a few seasons ago, when the visiting side improved their performances significantly to become a pretender for the upper half of the standings.
Palace, however, continue to languish in the lower half of the league table, and are currently ranked 12th.
Relegation seems to be too far a threat for Palace this season, but so does qualification for a European competition. They will seem all the closer to them after Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, and Bournemouth – all non-traditional top-six clubs – achieve it.
Chadi Riad and Cheick Doucoure are ruled out of this game for Palace, which will deal them a huge blow, while Chris Richards has incurred a thigh injury and seems to be a doubtful starter.
Crystal Palace predicted lineup vs Brighton: (3-4-2-1): Henderson; Clyne, Lacroix, Guehi; Munoz, Wharton, Lerma, Mitchell; Sarr, Eze; Mateta.
Brighton, ranked eighth in the league table, are known for their short and quick passing skills that often take their opponents by surprise.
Palace, however, know their tricks far too well to get fooled that easily, even though it won’t be easy for them to keep tabs at all times.
Brighton’s defence, too, has been in good shape. They rotate quickly from man-marking to zonal marking as and when the game’s demands shift.
What their defence will not be proud of, however, is that they’ve conceded the most number of penalties this season (7).
If they improve this statistic and their returns in the attacking third, things could look bright. They’ve only scored 6 goals in their last 5 matches.
Brighton are also beset with a long list of injuries in this meeting. Adam Webster, Igor, Rutter, James Milner, Jason Steele, Joel Veltman, and Tariq Lamptey, among others, are absent.
Brighton predicted lineup vs Crystal Palace: (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen; Hinshelwood, Van Hecke, Dunk, Estupinan; Baleba, Gomez; Minteh, Gruda, Mitoma; Pedro.
Bet hereThe home side have a slight upper hand in this game owing to the familiar playing conditions. We expect them to either win or draw this encounter.
Although Brighton were beaten 0-3 by Aston Villa in their previous meeting, they have been unbeaten in four fixtures prior to that.
Palace too have been unbeaten in their last 7 events, of which four were victories. Hence, we expect the hosts to have a slight advantage and make the most of it.
Crystal Palace have scored 9 goals in their last 5 matches. At the same time, the fact that they haven’t lost in 7 events might give them the confidence to push forward and extract full reward on Saturday.
Edward Nketiah has the most shots on target per game for the home squad (1.3) and will be the one to watch out for.
Similarly, Brighton got on the scoresheet in three out of their last five, which points towards a similar statistic for this weekend.
We expect both teams to find the next in this match (BTTS). Joao Pedro will be the player who will pose the biggest threat in the Brighton ranks.
