Aston Villa’s historic return to the Champions League after a 40-year absence was officially confirmed in midweek, but they will be looking to sign off from the 2023-24 campaign with a victory on the road against Crystal Palace this weekend.
Unai Emery has delivered a huge season for Aston Villa this term, as the West Midlands club can already begin to look ahead to a season back among Europe’s elite. Villa will finish fourth in the league standings this term, despite a wobble in their form across the final month of the season.
The Villa come into this final round of matches after going three league fixtures without a victory, but they have suffered just one defeat across their last five. Villa have won twice across the same period, but no team outside of the top three have won more regularly than the Midlands side this term. However, issues on the road throughout the season have been evident, as six of their nine losses have come on their travels.
It is an incredibly exciting time for Crystal Palace fans, and they will already be counting down the days until the start of the next season. Oliver Glasner has the Eagles playing attractive football, and they come into this final round as the form side in the competition outside of the top two. Palace have won four of their last five, which includes victories in each of their previous two.
Michael Olise was once again among the scorers in last weekend’s victory at Wolves, and keeping hold of the Frenchman could be their biggest challenge this summer. Palace’s home form has been excellent since a defeat against Man City, winning each of their last three and scoring eleven in the process.
Villa have picked up victories in each of their last two matches against the Eagles, with the only home win for Palace coming in this exact fixture last term. In fact, the away team has only picked up maximum points on one occasion in the last 12 Premier League fixtures between the teams.
Palace have made a very strong finish to the Premier League this term, and that bodes well for their chances this weekend. We could see the Eagles signing off with an entertaining victory at Selhurst Park.
