Colombia began the South American World Cup Qualifiers in high spirits. They were unbeaten in their first nine matches, including a victory over Argentina, the favourites of the South American group.
They seemed certain to qualify; however, their chances now look less promising after three consecutive losses, including a tense 3-2 defeat to Uruguay. Last week, Colombia also fell in a crucial game against Brazil (2-1), conceding a stoppage-time winner as Vinícius Jr secured the match ball.
These results have been disappointing for a team that regularly dominates fixtures but have struggled to keep clean sheets. The Colombians sit sixth in the standings with 19 points, having won five of their 13 encounters.
Colombia are still set to qualify, with just one event remaining. Luis Díaz was their only scorer against Brazil and remains their most consistent attacking threat. Most of the squads’ wins have come at home, and a victory against Paraguay could lift them to third place in the standings.
Yerson Mosquera and Juan Cabal both suffered ACL injuries and will be sidelined.
Colombia predicted line-up vs Paraguay (4-2-3-1): Vargas; Munoz, Cuesta, Lucumi, Mojica; Rios, Lerma; Arias, Rodriguez, Diaz; Duran’.
While Colombia started strong but faltered, Paraguay had the opposite trajectory. They parted ways with Daniel Garnero after his team failed to progress past the Copa América group stage.
Gustavo Alfaro took over shortly after, building his success on a solid defensive structure. Under the new coach, the squad remain unbeaten, with four wins and three draws.
Alfaro’s men shocked a struggling Brazil in Autumn 2024 (1-0) and later defeated Argentina 2-0. Paraguay have no problem conceding possession if it means shutting down central passing lanes.
They are on the verge of their first World Cup qualification in over a decade, having last appeared in 2010. The Paraguayans sit fifth in the standings, one point ahead of Colombia
Captain Gustavo Gomez will be out for the match with Hugo Cuenca.
Paraguay Predicted line-up vs Colombia (4-2-3-1): Fernandez; Caceres, Balbuena, Alderete, Alonso; Galarza, Villasanti; Cubas, Almiron, Sanabria; Enciso.
Bet hereAlthough the odds favour Colombia due to their status and superior individual talent, their recent form suggests a victory won’t come easily. They are winless in their previous three matches due to mistakes at both ends and will face one of the continent’s most compact defences.
However, despite their poor form, the hosts have consistently scored at home, making them likely to find the net again.
The home side have always produced quality attackers—Luis Díaz among them—but Jhon Durán has emerged as a rising star in recent years. His move to Aston Villa put him on the international stage, with his ball-striking ability standing out as one of his key attributes.
Despite moving to Al-Nassr, Jhon has continued to find the net, scoring five goals in just six matches, proving he doesn’t need regular minutes to make an impact. With Paraguay relying on a disciplined low block, it’s players like Durán who can exploit the few defensive gaps to score.
