The race to reach the final of the Europa Conference League continues on Thursday, as the all-important second legs are staged. An exciting clash awaits in Belgium judged on the first leg between Club Brugge and Fiorentina, with the teams sharing five goals in Italy last Thursday.
There was a thrilling clash last week between Club Brugge and Fiorentina, and we are no closer to deciding which team will progress through to the final. Five goals were shared in Italy last week, with Fiorentina eventually coming through with a 3-2 success following their late winner from M’Baia Nzola in the 91st minute.
However, Brugge were incredibly effective on the counter-attack throughout that first leg, as they netted twice against the run of play. But, there will likely be a different outlook to this second leg, with Brugge under pressure to chase the game in order to at least force extra time.
But, confidence will be taken from the Belgium side, as they were able to cause a lot of issues for Fiorentina in Italy. However, they were allowed back in the game due to the Italian’s inability to kill the game off. Fiorentina registered 31 shots in the first leg, but they only hit the target on ten occasions.
Despite that, they will be favoured in this second leg, as they look to reach a second straight Europa Conference League final. The Italian side have been reliable in the knockout stage of the competition this term after avoiding defeat in all five of their previous matches. They have scored an impressive ten goals, and have conceded on six occasions. That poor defensive record will at least give Brugge some hope ahead of this second leg on Thursday.
This will only be the second time that the two sides have clashed in a competitive fixture in Europe. However, the 3-2 success recorded by Fiorentina last week at least highlights that it should be a thrilling return clash between the teams.
The fact that Brugge will need to chase victory in this return leg could allow Fiorentina to have a greater number of chances on the counter-attack. For that reason, we will be siding with a victory for the travelling side on Thursday.
