Chelsea do not have any fond memories of their last Premier League game last Sunday, in which they were beaten 1-2 by Liverpool.
However, Enzo Maresca’s men recuperated soon enough and were able to thrash Panathinaikos 4-1 in the UEFA Europa Conference League midweek.
Nonetheless, they know that their main objective is to do well in the Premier League, and that is what they will focus on. Maresca has brought about a wind of change at Stamford Bridge and also a bit of stability, which was not seen at the club since Thomas Tuchel last was in charge.
His willingness to trust his youngsters to do the job in crunch situations has often helped Chelsea, and the fact that they are ranked sixth in the league table with fourteen points to their name is testament to the changes he has brought about.
The Blues will aim for a higher finish in the Premier League this season although attempting the title seems to be out of the question.
Although Chelsea have scored seventeen goals this season, they have also conceded ten, which means that their defensive lapses have cost them big at times. Maresca will hope to plug this hole in his side’s resume when they host Newcastle in another Sunday afternoon clash that their supporters will be keen on winning.
Recent Form | Win, Loss, Draw, Win, Win |
Key Players to Watch | Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez |
Team Strengths | Long passes, through balls and an excellent zonal marking system. |
Team Weaknesses | Fouling too often, allowing opponents’ shots on target. |
Injuries and Suspensions | Ben Chilwell |
Newcastle United will be well-rested for this game, given that they did not play midweek. However, manager Eddie Howe knows that to beat Chelsea, they will have to outthink their opponents’ strategies at first. The former Bournemouth boss has promised a lot to the supporters of the Toonarmy, and a lot will be expected of him this season as well.
The Magpies are perched upon the ninth position of the Premier League table with 12 points inside their kitty, and this clearly shows that they have the hunger to be in the top-six. To do that, however, they have to start building balls from midfield and not allow their opponents the opportunity to create transitions with ease.
Newcastle have not had a good run in their last five matches – losing two and drawing two. Their most recent loss to Brighton and Hove Albion last week was a painful 0-1 encounter at home, and Newcastle desperately need to turn the table around in this game against Chelsea.
Howe, meanwhile, is not blessed with the fact that a lot of his top players have been ruled out with injuries. Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson are the players whom he is bound to miss the most in this high-octane clash at Stamford Bridge.
Recent Form | Loss, Draw, Win, Draw, Loss |
Key Players to Watch | Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali |
Team Strengths | Attacking through the wings, playing on the counter-attack. |
Team Weaknesses | Defensive lapses inside own half, losing markers, losing transition from defence to attack. |
Injuries and Suspensions | Callum Wilson, Jamal Lascelles, Kieran Trippier, Martin Dubravka, Matt Targett, Sven Botman |
There have been a total of 30 recorded games between these two teams in the past, out of which Chelsea have won fifteen. Newcastle United have been victorious on nine occasions while the rest of the matches ended in draws.
The last time the two teams met was in March, in the previous EPL season, Chelsea emerged as winners at home (3-2). Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer and Mykhaylo Mudryk got on the scoresheet for the Blues while Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy pulled two goals back for the Magpies.
The game played prior to that, in the EFL League Cup quarterfinal, was drawn 1-1 before penalties decided the outcome and came down in favour of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Newcastle, however, will take great heart from the massive 4-1 victory they enjoyed over the Blues at St James’ Park in November 2023. This win is seen as one of the greatest Eddie Howe has enjoyed as manager of this historic club in the northeast of England.
One of the standout Chelsea players is midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The Argentinean World Cup winner has consistently shown why he can be relied upon. His ability to break transitions from defence to attack from his opponents has made him a valuable member of this Chelsea side.
Newcastle, however, will rely heavily upon centre-forward Alexander Isak. Although he did not fire against Brighton and Hove Albion in their previous Premier League game last weekend, Chelsea will find it difficult to contain him in this game. Isak has the capability to hold up play and can get quite physical with opposing defenders.
His willingness to win the second ball also makes him the first to get to good positions inside the box on most occasions. The iconic Cole Palmer, who has starred for both the Blues and the England national team recently, will be a player that Eddie Howe will desperately want to tie down in general.
It is usually seen that if Howe wants to put markers on a particular player, he is successful in doing so by deploying at least two of his most trusted lieutenants.
On Sunday, along with Newcastle’s fullbacks, central midfielder Sandro Tonali will have to bring his A-game. If the Italian is able to mark Palmer well and not give him much space to work his balls via curling passes and long balls, the Magpies will have a big advantage over their opponents.
We can expect to see a game in which play, both on and off the ball, will be delightful. Both these teams are known to exercise caution when going forward, but they do not restrain themselves when it comes to attacking on the counter.
New manager Enzo Maresca has built a good structure at Chelsea, and we often see the ball passing through the horizontal lines in order to break into the opposition’s defensive half.
However, Newcastle are no stranger to this kind of gameplay and can be relied upon to tighten their zonal marking system in this situation. Although they have conceded eight goals this season, Newcastle have worked hard on defending corners on the training ground, and Chelsea will have to attempt most of their goals from open play.
The visitors’ fullbacks – Lewis Hall and Valentino Livramento – are extremely young and blessed with pace. Chelsea will have to pull these fullbacks out of position with stray balls if they intend to use the wings and bring Noni Madueke and Jadon Sancho into play.
Chelsea hold the upper hand over Newcastle in this game, but there is no saying how the latter will respond to the challenges thrown their way. The visitors are known for breaking play into fragments whenever the need arises, and we could see that happening in this game against Chelsea.
However, the Blues are known to hold their shape defensively on most occasions, and the same will take place in this game as well.
If their defensive midfield duo of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez are on top of their game, it will be a little challenging for Newcastle to break through the lines and try to get on goal.
The likes of Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy will have a significant role to play on the wings, and one could even see them being asked to play as inverted wingers by manager Eddie Howe. The absence of Kieran Trippier and Jamal Lascelles in Newcastle’s defence, meanwhile, is going to give a legs-up to the Chelsea attackers.
Chelsea can counter-attack well, but they will have to be spurred into action early if Newcastle get into their skin.
In general, Eddie Howe likes to make sure that his teams try to get on the scoresheet as early as possible, but the presence of a boisterous crowd at Stamford Bridge on Sunday will make it quite a challenging task.
For Chelsea, the intention is clear: to get on the front foot as soon as possible. It remains to be seen if Enzo Maresca prefers João Félix over Nicolas Jackson as the sole striker in this game given that the former scored a brace midweek in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Jackson too has not done too badly for himself, picking up a goal against Liverpool in their 1-2 defeat last week and accumulating 5 goals and 3 assists in the Premier League already this season.
Newcastle’s central defenders Fabian Schar and Daniel Burn are both big men and will try to use their height to negate Chelsea’s advantage during set-pieces.
However, Schar and Burn need to be quick to recover if and when they lose the ball on Sunday because Jackson, Madueke, Sancho, and Palmer are hardly going to give them a second chance to make amends.
