Chelsea vs Everton Preview and Team News

Chelsea Team News

Chelsea have edged back into the Champions League conversation with a late but gritty win at Fulham. Yet, Enzo Maresca’s side still alternates between slick control and erratic transitions.

The squad’s last four league matches reflect their season-long inconsistency. Chelsea had a spirited 1-0 home victory against Tottenham, where Fernández made a great untracked run into the box.

However, they followed with a lackluster 0-0 draw at Brentford. Their 2-2 draw against Ipswich was marred by many defensive lapses. Jackson’s clever movement was undermined by poor spacing in the rest of the defence. In Sunday’s game, they secured a 2-1 comeback victory at Fulham. Neto’s stoppage-time goal overshadowed the anxious moments.

Enzo Maresca reiterated this week that inverted‑right‑back patterns are non‑negotiable because they “give us the extra man and accelerate Palmer’s half‑spaces.” That structure also suffocated Tottenham when right-back Gusto stepped inside to create a 2‑3‑5 in possession, allowing Palmer to dictate higher up.

Maresca’s possession strategy relies on staggered distances in the centre around Caicedo and one of the inverted full-backs. This is why Chelsea battle with defensive transitions after losing the ball.

It’s worth noting that since Palmer returned to the main squad, Chelsea averages 55% of their attacks down the right flank. However, Cole lacks sufficient support from Madueke or Neto, which forces him to make difficult decisions in tight spaces.

Maresca confirmed that Romeo Lavia completed a full week of training and should be available. This gives Chelsea their most proficient first‑phase organiser back at the base of midfield.

Malo Gusto, who departed Craven Cottage with a hamstring twinge, is a major doubt. The club will not risk him after scans on Monday showed low‑grade damage. Christopher Nkunku was omitted from Fulham for tactical reasons rather than fitness. Wesley Fofana and Marc Guiu are still on individual programmes.

Everton Team News

Everton saw a nine‑match unbeaten run snapped by Liverpool and Man City and must patch up a stretched back line before travelling south.

Their momentum stalled in Saturday’s 2‑0 loss to Manchester City. It was a game that flipped only after Tarkowski limped off with a hamstring strain and saw the Citizens strike twice in the final five minutes.

Still, Everton remain unbeaten in ten of their last thirteen league events, thanks to a compact mid‑block discipline. It earned a 1‑1 draw with Arsenal on April 5 and a 1‑0 win at Forest on April 12.

Moyes counters with a compact 4‑4‑2 out of possession, Harrison and Ndiaye tucking narrow to deny the half‑spaces that many opponents failed to exploit. Everton’s shape forces opponents wide, then contests first balls with Tarkowski/Branthwaite and sweeps second balls through Gueye.

Yet the loss of Tarkowski’s leadership strips Everton of their best box defender. City completed 11 of 17 crosses after his withdrawal, two leading to goals.

Dominic Calvert‑Lewin (hamstring) is pencilled in for a May 1 return, while Jesper Lindstrøm and Orel Mangala remain long‑term absentees.

Chelsea vs Everton Prediction

  • Pick: Chelsea to win
  • Odds: 1.58 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Everton

The hosts’ ceiling remains capped by erratic rest‑defence, yet Everton arrive stripped of their aerial leader and short of pace in the channels. If Lavia starts, Chelsea’s possession should be calmer, and the guests will struggle to sustain long spells outside their own third.

Expect Everton to nick a goal via a set‑piece second phase, but superior home depth in advanced areas – Palmer’s craft, Nkunku’s third‑man runs, Neto’s ball‑carrying – should tilt the balance.

With Chelsea winning the expected‑goals battle in three of their last four league matches and the guests generating only 0.58 at home to Arsenal, the hosts should prevail.

Moreover, Everton have not won at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League since 1994 and have scored only twice across their last seven visits. The most recent was a late Ellis Simms equaliser two years ago when both sides were in turmoil rather than contention.

Chelsea vs Everton Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Cole Palmer to score
  • Odds: 2.4 (22Bet)

Cole Palmer has generated 14 shots and eight chances across Chelsea’s last three league games.

With Tarkowski absent and Everton funnelling attacks down their right, Palmer should receive multiple cut‑back opportunities around the penalty spot.

Everton have conceded in six of their previous seven away fixtures. They looked particularly stretched in zone 14 once City’s midfielders punched vertical passes on Saturday. Palmer operates in precisely that pocket.
