After a difficult start to 2025, Celta Vigo returned to winning ways, undefeated since February. The Galicians defeated Mallorca (1-2) away from home, despite conceding in the 17th minute.
They dominated the game, but it wasn’t until the second half that they found the lead, thanks to goals from Alfon González and U21 star Fer López. Their dominance only showed after Alfon’s goal. The team generated numerical superiority with ease, leaving Mallorca unable to react.
Celta Vigo sit 7th in La Liga with 43 points, only five behind Real Betis and Villarreal. The European dream, which seemed so distant a few months ago, could become a reality if the hosts extend their eight-match unbeaten run.
Williot Swedberg is still recovering and waiting for medical clearance to feature against Espanyol.
Celta Vigo Predicted line-up vs Espanyol (3-4-3): Guaita; Alonso, Starfelt, J. Rodríguez; Mingueza, Moriba, Beltrán, Carreira; A. González, Durán, Aspas.
Espanyol are temporarily out of the relegation zone following a 1-1 draw with Atlético de Madrid and a surprising 4-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano at Vallecas. The win was dubbed ‘the best match of the season’ by Relevo, and by default, the largest victory of the club in the 24/25 course.
Head coach Manolo González set up a deep block, countering Rayo Vallecano’s plan, which was flawed due to technical imprecision. González has left his decisions open, claiming he ‘does not want to stay for the sake of staying’, although a contract extension would not be surprising in the coming weeks. His team are now four points clear of the relegation zone.
However, not everything is well at Cornellà. Spanish courts are investigating Espanyol player Álvaro Aguado. According to El País, there are accusations of sexual assault. The club reacted through their spokesperson, requesting the presumption of innocence.
Espanyol star Javi Puado has been linked with a move to Atlético de Madrid, as management could not find an agreement to extend his contract. Los Rojiblancos are not the first club to knock on his door. Sevilla are also rumoured to have approached the star.
Puado has neither confirmed nor denied the rumours. With 10 goals in 26 matches, his value is undeniable.
Brian Oliván, José Gragera, and Pablo Ramón remain sidelined with injuries.
Espanyol Predicted line-up vs Celta Vigo (4-2-3-1): J. García; Romero, Cabrera, Kumbulla, El Hilali; Lozano, U. González; Puado, Exposito, A. Roca; R. Fernández.
Bet hereEspanyol might have had two excellent games of late, but they’re unlikely to stop Celta Vigo. Balaidos is a notoriously difficult venue, especially in early spring, when rainy conditions often favour the hosts.
Additionally, the locals are undefeated in the last eight, and showed against Mallorca that they’re capable of breaking low blocks without much sweat. Espanyol often tend to give possession away for the sake of defending, which may not be enough against Celta Vigo.
While betting odds will favour Iago Aspas as the most probable scorer, Fer López could be an interesting pick. The U21 star scored the winner against Mallorca and was substituted in the second half. It was his third goal in thirteen appearances, and his name is starting to float across football media in Spain.
His fluidity and unique sense of positioning make him a quality forward. With Espanyol failing to close spaces down, Fer’s attacking flair could make the difference.
