Burnley will play their final Premier League match for the foreseeable future on the final day this weekend when they host Nottingham Forest. The visitors still need a point to mathematically secure their top flight status.
It has been a challenging 2023-24 season for Burnley, as the Clarets have already been condemned back to the Championship following their defeat last weekend. The club have been made to pay for making a slow start to the campaign, as they were always fighting a losing battle. The Clarets have at least put in some battling performances across the final months, but they come into the final round after losing each of their last two.
Burnley have also recorded just one win in their last five, with two matches ending in draws. Home form has been a massive issue for the Clarets throughout the campaign. They have recorded just two wins in front of their home fans, and they have suffered 12 league defeats, which is one more than they have suffered on their travels.
Nottingham Forest still have work to do in order to maintain their top flight status. The East Midlands side require a point to confirm their status in the Premier League for next term, but even a defeat could see them survive, providing that there isn’t a 12-goal swing in Luton’s favour.
Forest have lost three of their last four matches and they have picked up just eight victories in 37 outings this term. They have struggled in the final third throughout the campaign after netting just 47 goals. Only Burnley, Everton, and Sheffield United have scored fewer goals this term. However, confidence will be gained from their recent win on the road at Sheffield United.
The previous meeting between the sides this term saw the points shared following a 1-1 draw. That result means that Burnley are now unbeaten across their last eight matches against Forest in all competitions. Forest’s last win against the Clarets was achieved at the City Ground in December 2012.
Burnley’s recent performance levels at least give them a chance of going down into the Championship with a victory on the final day this weekend. Therefore, we could see the Clarets landing a success to extend their unbeaten run over their East Midlands rivals.
