For Brugge, nothing will be bigger than making it to the next round of the UEFA Champions League (the round of sixteen) by beating Atalanta in this game. For a club that has never won the Champions League, and only once been runners-up (1977-78), tasting glory at that level will mean so much to the community they represent in Belgium.
For that to materialise, however, they will have to ward off the threat of Atalanta in the first leg of this round of 32 fixture.
What will prove to be quite fortunate for Brugge is that they do not have any injured players in their ranks, which means that they will be able to select their best possible starting lineup.
Despite being beaten 1-3 by Manchester City in their previous Champions League encounter, Brugge will be confident enough to take their opponents on owing to their hybrid defensive system which shifts shape as soon as they lose the ball in their opponents’ half. The usage of their wings, especially during counter-attacks, provides an extremely attractive brand of football.
Brugge predicted lineup vs Atalanta (4-2-3-1): Mignolet; De Cuyper, Mechele, Ordóñez, Sabbe; Onyedika, Jashari; Jutglà, Vanaken, Talbi; Tzolis.
Atalanta will not lose the importance of this fixture, given that they have only recently tasted European glory (they won the UEFA Europa League last season by defeating a near-unbeatable Bayer Leverkusen in the final).
They know that they will have to keep the ball with them on most occasions and also use the tall frames of their players to good advantage whenever a dead-ball situation arises. This can give them quite a big advantage against Brugges in this encounter.
While the absence of star attacker Lookman is going to sting Atalanta a lot, so will the injury to former Arsenal fullback Kolasinac. Scamacca, Scalvini, Carnesecchi and Kossounou are some of the other players who make up the injured list.
However, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men know how to tackle challenges well, as was seen in their previous Champions League encounter, a 2-2 draw with Barcelona, in which they were quite unfortunate to not emerge with a win.
Retegui, who often drops deep and creates trouble with his off-the-ball positioning, will be a player to watch out for, and someone who can truly fill in the gap left by Lookman’s absence. Veteran Italian defender Toloi may be asked to play in the left centre-back’s position owing to Kolasinac’s injury.
Atalanta predicted lineup vs Brugge (3-4-2-1): Patricio; Tolói, Hien, Djimsiti; Bellanova, Éderson, De Roon, Ruggeri; De Ketelaere, Samardžić; Retegui.
Bet hereAtalanta, owing to their better squad strength, have a slight advantage over their opponents in this game, and we expect them to either win or draw this encounter. Gasperini is a shrewd character, and he knows that coming away with even a draw in this fixture will not be too bad a result as they will play the second leg at home in familiar conditions.
Strangely, these two teams have never met before. However, Atalanta, who have been unbeaten in their last four matches before losing to Bologna in the Serie A, will have the upper hand.
We expect a total of over 2 goals in this game, with Atalanta quite naturally favoured to do most of the scoring. In star attacker Lookman’s absence, others such as Retegui and De Ketelaere will have to step up and showcase their potential.
The duo have scored a combined total of 21 goals in the Serie A at the time of writing. Brugge have seen over two goals being scored in two out of their last three matches while for Atalanta, this prediction has come true in three out of their last five outings.
