Brighton continue their impressive start to the season and are just one point behind second-placed Manchester City in the standings.

Fabian Hürzeler has been very subtle in tactically adjusting his team to exploit the opponents’ weaknesses in each match while maintaining his basic style. This is very different from what we saw last season, when De Zerbi’s team displayed a similar set of attacking ideas in almost every match, especially at the start of attacks.

Brighton’s main problem, which Fabian Hürzeler has so far failed to solve, is the transition from attack to defence. In this phase of the game the Seagulls often make mistakes. Of course, using a high defensive line requires a very high level of concentration and physical strength, which not all players are able to maintain.

Southampton

Southampton had a unique chance to defeat Liverpool in the previous round when they led 2-1 in the second half. But a series of gross individual errors in defence resulted in a 2-3 loss. They could have even conceded even more goals if Liverpool had been more clinical with their finishing. 

Saints coach Russell Martin has been repeatedly criticised for having radical ideas, which often result in conceding goals. In the match against Liverpool, it was again evident that the Southampton players tried to build attacks through short passes, even in situations where it was better to make long passes.

In almost every match, Southampton try to press high, even in situations where it is better to play in a low defensive block. A prime example was the game against Liverpool. With a 2-1 score, Southampton used a high defensive line and tried to press instead of retreating into a deep defensive block. 

As a result of this, Russell Martin’s side conceded the second and third goals of the match. Such situations have occurred regularly this season, leading to a large number of conceded goals.

But even with all the above mentioned problems, Southampton are able to create bright spectacular combinations in every match and often pose a threat to their opponents.  

Young talent Tyler Dibling has been making a name for himself with his superb dribbling and incredibly successful progression of the ball. If he would start finishing high-quality chances, Southampton might end up in a higher position.
