Dortmund’s season has been a tale of two halves, as the team excels in every competition except the Bundesliga. The team won against Club Brugge (3-0) and demolished Celtic (7-1). And who’s going to be the next opponent? Real Madrid, four days after the match against St Pauli.
While Dortmund is regularly in the elite of the Bundesliga, the team has found it challenging to impose its own tempo in the league. Dortmund has collected just ten points from six games, with three wins, a goalless draw against Bremen (0-0), and losses to Stuttgart (5-1) and Union Berlin (2-1).
The heavy defeat against Stuttgart led to mockery from fans, especially since Dortmund bought multiple players from Stuttgart during the summer transfer window.
Dortmund’s schedule is loaded for the upcoming weeks, as they will face Real Madrid in the Champions League, Augsburg in the Bundesliga and Wolfsburg in the DFB-Pokal.
Regarding injuries, Yan Couto, Karim Adeyemi, Gio Reyna and Julien Duranville will miss the match, while Julian Ryerson, Niklas Süle and Maximilian Beier are doubtful.
St Pauli’s return to the Bundesliga after more than a decade in the 2. Bundesliga means that many of the classic matches involving the North German club will take place this season.
The last encounter between St.Pauli and Dortmund dates back to 2011, and it ended in a 2-0 victory for Dortmund. Curiously enough, current Dortmund manager Nuri Sahin was on the pitch as a player at the time.
If Dortmund’s season is far from great, St Pauli’s season is typical for a newly promoted club to the Bundesliga. They have only tasted victory once, against Freiburg (3-0). They drew against Leipzig in a goalless draw and lost four games. As a result, Pauli is currently 15th and could slide into the relegation zone after the weekend.
St Pauli’s schedule is full of difficult games. In the coming days, they will face Dortmund, Wolfsburg, and RB Leipzig. Dortmund manager Sahin praised the team for being a “structured team.”
Bet hereDortmund is favoured by the betting odds, which wouldn’t surprise any avid Bundesliga fan. Borussia hasn’t lost a game at home on a Friday night for twenty years, a statistic Nuri Sahi said he “wouldn’t mind extending”.
Dortmund needs the victory to get back to the Bundesliga’s top three, and this is one of the “easiest” fixtures available on Dortmund’s agenda in the coming weeks.
St Pauli is known for using switches as an attacking strategy but has struggled with defensive transitions. Sahin noted that his team will “try to play actively”, which could suggest a more attack-oriented Dortmund: “As a player, I loved playing in the evening, and I get the feeling it’s the same for the lads”.
One of the stars of the season has been Serhou Guirassy, author of historic seasons as Stuttgart’s striker. As he plays at the top of Sahin’s formations, he’s often fed chances by Julian Brandt and Karim Adeyemi. The latter will miss the match due to an injury, but it should not stop Guirassy from shining.
Given St Pauli’s struggles to keep clean sheets, this is a prime opportunity for Guirassy to build confidence by scoring goals ahead of Dortmund’s tough upcoming fixtures. He was brought to Dortmund for the goals and he will need to show the club he was the right pick.
