Dortmund appointed Nuri Şahin this summer as head coach of the team after they parted ways with Edin Terzić. He had previously been working as Terzić’s assistant for six months and was trusted with this role due to his deep connection with the club and the respect he commands among players and fans.
In the Champions League, the club couldn’t have asked for a better start. Die Schwarz-Gelben opened their campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over Brugge, followed by a 7-1 demolition of Celtic.
Their winning streak was halted by Real Madrid (5-2) in an eventful game, but Dortmund returned to winning ways with a victory against Sturm Graz (1-0) and a clinical 3-0 triumph against Dinamo Zagreb, securing fourth spot in their group and keeping their knockout stage hopes alive.
At home, it’s a different story. Dortmund are only fifth in the Bundesliga, just one point behind Leverkusen but already ten behind Bayern. The story isn’t much better in the DFB Pokal, as Dortmund were booted out of the competition by Wolfsburg (1-0).
Their most recent match, a 4-0 rout of Freiburg, showed glimpses of their potential, but the preceding 3-1 loss to Mainz exposed their defensive issues. In just 18 Bundesliga matches, Dortmund conceded 18 goals, which has prevented them from mounting a serious title challenge.
Niklas Süle, Kjell Wätjen, and Karim Adayemi will be sidelined for the match, while Emre Can is serving his two-game suspension following a red card.

Like Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich made a bold managerial change this season, appointing Vincent Kompany as their head coach. Director of Football Max Eberl was responsible for the decision, and many criticized his choice.
In the Bundesliga, there is no questioning that the Belgian manager has done quite well. The Bavarians are first with 29 points, six points ahead of second-placed Frankfurt, and eight points ahead of third-placed RB Leipzig.
However, Bayern’s record against their direct competitors leaves room for improvement. Early-season draws against Leverkusen (1-1) and Frankfurt (3-3) highlighted the team’s growing pains as players adjusted to Kompany’s tactical philosophy.
In the Champions League, Bayern have had a more turbulent campaign. They opened with a stunning 9-2 demolition of Dinamo Zagreb and followed it up with hard-fought 1-0 victories against PSG and Benfica.
Despite these highlights, heavy defeats to Barcelona (4-1) and Aston Villa (1-0) have exposed gaps in the team’s defensive organization and Kompany’s ability to compete at the highest level.
These results show that Bayern have improved under Kompany but that they still lackthe refinement to be an elite competitor.
Injuries add to the challenges, with Hikori Ito, Josip Stanišić, João Palhinha, and Aleksandar Pavlović all sidelined. These absences could affect Bayern’s defensive depth and midfield control, leaving Kompany with fewer options to implement his possession-based style.

Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have faced each other 52 times. The clash is known as Der Klassiker in Germany, and the tension is comparable to El Clásico in Spain. In 52 matches, Bayern Munich won 29 games, while Borussia Dortmund won 14 matches. The two teams also drew nine times.
Dortmund won the last match (2-0) with goals from Adeyemi and Julian Ryerson, taking advantage of Bayern’s existential crisis under Thomas Tuchel. Bayern dominated for the majority of the match, but the Bavarians were unable to score despite seventeen attempts. It also marked Dortmund’s first victory against Bayern since 2019.
Bayern’s last victory against Dortmund dates back to November 2023, which ended in a confident 4-0 victory. The game saw a complete domination of the Bavarians, despite facing an in-form Dortmund.
Bet hereDortmund invested 18M in the transfer of Serhou Guirassy, which turned out to be a bargain. Guirassy scored six goals and registered one assist in eight Bundesliga games, while his Champions League record is just as impressive: four goals and two assists in five games.
Dortmund’s need for a prolific goalscorer has been met in Guirassy, whose ability to exploit Bayern’s defensive frailties could make him the key figure in this Der Klassiker clash.
For Bayern, the obvious choice would be Harry Kane, last season’s Bundesliga top scorer. However, Bayern also have one of the brightest wonderkids in world football: Jamal Musiala. He scored five goals and registered one assist in nine games while scoring one goal and registering two assists in five Champions League games.
His importance cannot be overstated as the orchestrator of Bayern’s attacking moves.
Bayern traditionally dominate this encounter, irrespective of form. However, this game will be tense as both teams are navigating transitional phases under new managers. How they will approach Der Klassiker is a mystery, but endless transitions are expected, with each team looking to exploit the other’s fragile backline.
Both teams struggle on the defensive end and will look to attack instead. Kingsley Coman was great in the last games, but he needs to improve his performance in front of goal.
Bayern’s attack is known for combining technique and pacey players, which will be a challenge for Dortmund’s defense. Marcel Sabitzer left the pitch injured in their last game, which only makes matters worse for Die Borussen.
On the other hand, Bayern has struggled against big teams in Germany and this is a game where mental resilience will decide the winner. Kimmich hasn’t been as consistent as he has been in previous seasons, which could make him a target for Dortmund’s staff to exploit.
While Dortmund won the previous encounter, it’s hard to imagine that they will be able to sustain their run. Bayern Munich have dominated the tie for years, as their mental resilience has been key.
This is something Dortmund still lacks, as shown in the 1-3 defeat against Mainz. Their 4-0 victory against Freiburg was hardly impressive, heavily influenced by Freiburg’s two red cards.
Indeed, the game will be played at Signal Iduna Park, which should favour Dortmund. Nonetheless, considering the defensive issues of the backline, I expected Bayern to take this one home.
There’s no safer bet than Harry Kane scoring. The Englishman adapted well to the Bundesliga environment last season and became Europe’s top scorer. This season hasn’t been any kinder to Kane’s opponents, as he continues to punish them for their mistakes.
Dortmund famously often blunders as Nico Schlotterbeck tends to panic under pressure, which is enough for Harry Kane to score.
