Borussia currently rank 6th in the Bundesliga, collecting 25 points in 15 matches. The team finished the 2024 year with a 3-1 win to Wolfsburg after drawing three games back-to-back. Barcelona defeated them (2-3) in their last European fixture of the year.
Head coach Nuri Sahin confirmed he might have to travel without Waldemar Anton and Almugera Kabar, who are both ill. Pascal Groß will also miss the match as he serves his suspension after being sent off against Wolfsburg. Niklas Süle is still recovering and won’t be available either.
Dortmund have been linked with Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea, who is open to a loan move in January. BVB are looking to strengthen their squad in the midfield, while the Blues need to trim down their roster.
Borussia are also rumoured to be considering a loan move for Manchester United star Marcus Rashford. The club experienced a similar change last year when they welcomed Jadon Sancho. Rashford hasn’t featured in six matches and is said to be open to a new challenge. However, his salary is likely to prevent the move, as Man United will want the receiving club to cover his wages.
Dortmund aren’t the only interested club. AC Milan and Juventus are also interested in the Englishman. Donyell Malen is likely to leave, with Aston Villa interested.

Team Strengths | Talented squad, strong attacking partnership and variety in midfield |

Bayer Leverkusen rank second in the Bundesliga with 32 points in 15 matches, two points behind league leaders Bayern Munich. BVB haven’t lost a game in the league since their 3-2 defeat to Leipzig in late August, which remains their only loss in the competition.
Xabi Alonso’s team only suffered another defeat this season, with Liverpool winning 4-0 in the Champions League. Bayer are fourth in the competition, with only Liverpool and Barcelona scoring more points.
Midfielder Granit Xhaka could miss out on the match after suffering an injury in training last Tuesday. His recovery is key, as the Swiss has featured in all games in the Bundesliga this season.
Jeanuël Belocian and Amine Adli remain sidelined through injury.
Recent Form | WWWW |
Key Player to Watch | Florian Wirtz |
Team Strengths | Strong team cohesion, dominant in possession, create many chances, dynamic midfield |
Team Weaknesses | Lacking defence and lack of squad depth |
Key injuries and suspensions. | Jeanuël Belocian, Amine Adli and Granit Xhaka (doubtful) |
The two teams have faced each other 90 times, with 36 matches ending in Dortmund’s favour. Bayer won 30 clashes, with 24 ending in a draw. Their last encounter tied 1-1 in late April. Niclas Füllkrug gave his side the lead, but Josip Stanišić equalized for his team in additional time.
Borussia last defeated Leverkusen in January 2023, as Karim Adeyemi scored the first goal, and Edmond Tapsoba scored an own goal.
Bayer’s last victory against Dortmund dates back to February 2022, when they won 5-2. Borussia conceded in the 10th minute through Manuel Akanji’s own goal, but Jeremie Frimpong’s own goal brought the two teams back to level.
Florian Wirtz and Robert Andrich scored before the half-time, returning the lead to Leverkusen. Jonathan Tah found the net 10 minutes into the second half to make it 4-1, and Moussa Diaby’s strike made it 5-1. Substitute Steffen Tigges finally changed it to 5-2 for Dortmund in the last minute of the game.
With Donyell Malen possibly leaving, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Dutchman on the bench against Bayer.
The logical choice for the most important player would be Serhou Guirassy, whose instinct for goals has seen the team’s survival. The striker scored six goals and assisted one in 12 games, scoring six in six Champions League encounters.
With Granit Xhaka possibly out, Leverkusen will rely on Florian Wirtz for guidance. The 21-year-old has been highly rated since starting playing with the first team and is already rumoured to be targeted by Bayern Munich.
Wirtz scored seven goals and assisted seven in 15 Bundesliga matches, scoring five and assisting one in 6 Champions games. His attacking stats speak for themselves, but they would be incomplete without his technical level. The ball is often glued to his feet.
He is undoubtedly one of Germany’s hottest talents and ranks among the best youngsters in the world. Stopping him will be a difficult task, particularly with Patrik Schick’s imposing presence in the penalty box.
Bet hereWhile head-to-head statistics would conclude this game to be a close one, Leverkusen’s form would indicate that a victory for Xabi Alonso’s team is likely. His side haven’t won a single match in the Bundesliga since late August, which explains why they’re second behind Bayern Munich.
On the other hand, Dortmund continue to struggle on the defensive end, being unable to perform consistently due to injuries and a lack of midfield dominance. Bayer are likely to use their wings as a distraction for midfielders to progress through the central channels.
One might think a draw would be likely, as their last two clashes ended in a 1-1 draw. However, the current form suggests Leverkusen will take the three points home.
Xabi Alonso’s roster isn’t as dynamic as it was last year, yet it remains a serious force in German football. Their block moves like a true unit and continues to build through a dominant midfield. The wings-backs remain important as decoys but can create danger in the box if they’re given too much space.
Borussia’s shaky defence continue to prevent them from advancing in the Bundesliga. Any mistake from Schlotterbeck or Hummels would be enough for Bayer to win.
Although Wirtz is likelier to assist than score, Borussia’s poor defence brings me back to him scoring on Friday. He assisted three in Bayer Leverkusen’s win against Freiburg, which means he’s full of confidence.
He’s the team’s best player by far, the playmaker, and the soul of the team. If there’s anyone Dortmund should be looking to man-mark, it’s clearly Florian Wirtz.
