Belgium vs Ukraine Preview and Team News

Belgium Team News

Belgium take on Ukraine in the second leg of their UEFA Nations League A Qualification final on Sunday. Their first match ended in a 3-1 defeat in a game that was played at Estadio Enrique Roca de Murcia. Although Lukaku opened the score in the 40th minute, the Belgians conceded three goals in the second half.

The home squad like to use their wingers to make space for their attackers to get into good positions.

One of the main reasons Belgium have been so successful in the past is due to Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne in the attacking midfield department. He likes to draw opposition defenders out of their positions and create chances that can be converted into goals by his attack-minded teammates.

Rudi Garcia would have imagined his debut as head coach for Belgium to be more successful. The Frenchman was critical of his squad after the game:

“In the first half we had a difficult start, then we got the control. We played well and scored a nice first goal. A second one could have been possible, but oh well. After the 1-1 we collapsed. That shouldn’t happen, of course. We will analyse the goals conceded and try to make sure that doesn’t happen again. We will also analyse the physical parameters. I have the impression that the Ukrainians were fitter and could run even more than us.”

Captain Lukaka went even further, claiming:

“It’s a question of mentality. We have a mental problem. I compare it to the previous generation. We have to develop a mentality as a team because then we won’t concede these kinds of goals anymore. That’s where it starts: winning duels. We have a new generation, but losing like this is really not acceptable.”

Belgium will have to make do without Malick Fofana and Arthur Theate because of injuries.

Belgium predicted lineup vs Ukraine (4-3-3): Courtois; Castagne, Faes, Debast, De Cuyper; De Bruyne, Tielemans, Vanaken; Doku, Trossard, Lukaku.

Ukraine Team News

Ukraine rely heavily on attacking on the counter and will do the same on Sunday. They’re unbeaten in their last four matches, which should give them the confidence to take on their rivals away from home. Their 3-1 victory in the first leg against Belgium will further boost their confidence.

The guests depend on the long balls played into the box by their defenders. However, they might have to shift their tactics and bring their attacking midfielders into the game.

One of the reasons the visitors have made it this far in the tournament is the presence of their central midfielders. They recycle the ball quickly and convert chances of desperation into assault. These small plays look fluid to the spectator and involve more than one participant.

Ukraine’s attackers are also quick to snatch the ball away from their opponents. They then shift their formation to move them into good areas and outnumber the defenders who are marking them. This strategy involves a lot of one-two play in which attackers use the overlap to get ahead of their markers.

Maksym Talovierov is expected to miss this game due to a knee injury and may only return in May.

Ukraine will miss Mykhaylo Mudryk, who was suspended from football after testing positive for a banned substance at the end of last year.

Ukraine predicted lineup vs Belgium (4-3-2-1): Trubin; Konoplya, Zabarnyi, Matvienko, Mykolenko; Kalyuzhnyi, Zinchenko, Sudakov; Tsygankov, Nazarenko; Dovbyk.

Belgium vs Ukraine Prediction

  • Pick: Draw
  • Odds: 4.7 (22Bet)
  • Score prediction: Belgium 2-1 Ukraine

After the 3-1 loss, the hosts will have to secure a victory to avoid degradation from the A-division of the Nations League. However, the first leg showed that Belgium are still a project in the works. The squad lacked mechanisms, and the frustration was palpable after the game.

The Ukrainians, on the other hand, will have gained confidence from Thursday’s victory. Known for their defensive playing style, they’ll do everything in their power to protect their lead.

Belgium vs Ukraine Prediction, Betting Tip

  • Pick: Total over 2 goals
  • Odds: 1.28 (22Bet)

The hosts are currently going through one of their worst runs of form. They’ve lost five out of their previous six matches and have difficulty scoring.

However, at home against Ukraine, they’ll be expected to turn things around drastically. They will, however, have an upper hand, which they’ll exercise quite comfortably.

As a natural result, we anticipate a total of over two goals since the defence of either side has recently been unable to keep up with the challenges sent their way.
