Barcelona vs Inter Preview and Team News

Barcelona Team News

Barcelona claimed their 32nd Copa del Rey title after a tense 3-2 win over Real Madrid in La Cartuja.

The Catalans opened the scoring through Pedri, but Real overturned to 2-1 in the second half with only fifteen minutes left, thanks to a free-kick from Kylian Mbappé. A goal from Ferrán Torres forced extra time, where Jules Koundé scored the winner in the 116th minute.

This meeting marked the second trophy of Hansi Flick’s tenure, after winning the Supercopa in January, also against Real Madrid. Although Barcelona dominated the match in most phases, the fatigue resulting from a 120-minute match has worried fans ahead of the clash against Inter on Wednesday.

An exquisite performance from Pau Cubarsí at the back kept most of the attacks at bay, thanks to his intelligent positioning.

Flick’s substitutions ensured Barcelona would keep calm, as he brought Eric García, Ronald Araújo, Gavi, and Pau Victor on. All of them are rather physical players who could keep up with the tension of the match when it mattered most.

Alejandro Balde, Marc Bernal, Marc Casadó, and Robert Lewandowski will be sidelined with injuries.

Barcelona predicted line-up vs Inter

Barcelona predicted line-up vs Inter (4-2-3-1): Szczęsny; Martin, Martínez, Cubarsí, Koundé; Pedri, de Jong; Raphinha, Olmo, Yamal; Torres.

Key Player to Watch Pedri
Team Strengths Strong mental resilience, established tactical identity, intense off the ball, attacking high-line, balanced in profiles, chance creation
Team Weaknesses Risky high line, lack of width on the left, injuries, demanding system leading to individual mistakes
Key injuries and suspensions. Marc Casadó, Marc Bernal, Alejandro Balde, Robert Lewandowski

Inter Team News

Inter started the Champions League as one of the favourites due to their versatility as a team. But recent weeks have demonstrated that the squad may be too thin to compete on all fronts. The side are winless in their previous four matches across all tournaments, having failed to score in their last three encounters.

The squad were caught off guard by AS Roma (0-1) after Matías Soulé scored in the 22nd minute, with the team lacking energy. This has been a regular pattern recently, as in the game against Bologna (0-1). As a result, Inter have dropped to second in Serie A. Napoli now lead with a three-point advantage.

To add insult to injury, Inter dropped out of the Coppa Italia after losing 3-0 to AC Milan. They were unable to make the best of their dominance in possession. One of the surprises was that coach Simone Inzaghi didn’t rotate his charges in the Coppa Italia. This has led to fatigue among most of the players.

Benjamin Pavard, Marcus Thuram, and Valentin Carboni will be out due to injuries.

Inter predicted line-up vs Barcelona

Inter predicted line-up vs Barcelona (3-5-2): Sommer; Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Taremi, Martínez.

Key Player to Watch Lautaro Martínez
Team Strengths Diversity between slow and quick-paced play, strong in counter-attacks and good defending in mid-block
Team Weaknesses Lack of squad depth leading to fatigue, lack of quality up front, injury to Thuram
Key injuries and suspensions. Benjamin Pavard, Marcus Thuram, Valentin Carboni

Barcelona vs Inter Head-to-Head Statistics

Although these two European giants regularly participate in the Champions League, they haven’t played each other many times.

Their last clash was a double-encounter in 2022. Inter defeated Barça (1-0) in Milano, while drawing 2-2 in Barcelona under Xavi Hernández. This match was marked with refereeing controversies due to alleged handballs, which were fatal for the Catalans’ qualification for the knock-out round.

Barça last defeated Inter in 2019, with Carles Pérez and Ansu Fati finding the net. Romelu Lukaku scored his team’s only goal.

Barcelona still lead with three victories while Inter Milan have won once. These two sides also drew twice.

Barcelona vs Inter Player Focus

The question behind the majority of Barcelona’s supporters has been whether Dani Olmo would recover in time. As he started against Real Madrid, there’s no doubt he’ll be their most important playmaker against Inter.

When he carries the ball, Barcelona advance best to the final third as he accelerates the team’s counter-attacks. It’s in the club’s best interest for Olmo to act as a ‘10’ against Inter, especially following the injury of Robert Lewandowski.

Barça’s best games have often featured Yamal and Olmo playing together, thanks to their creativity and rapid decision-making.

Inter’s most important player would have been Marcus Thuram, whose partnership with Lautaro Martínez is considered a game-changer.  He provides the physical presence Martínez needs to be accompanied by.

In his absence, it’ll be Bastoni who may be thought of as the guests’ most important player. The defender leads the defence by example, and his role will only grow in importance during Pavard’s absence.

He’s as much of a ball-playing defender as a solid rock in defence. This makes him key to preventing Barcelona from scoring through Ferrán Torres through the middle. Bastoni will likely be tasked with marking Yamal, one of the trickiest challenges he can be given.

Barcelona vs Inter Analysis

While Barcelona have advanced in the Champions League with relative ease until now, this may be the most difficult opponent they could have asked for. Inter’s versatility makes them a fierce team to play against. Inzaghi demonstrated his tactical soundness as Inter knocked Bayern out in the previous round.

With both squads coming tired to the match, it’s likely we’ll see a game full of goals, although Barcelona are expected to dominate with a home advantage.

Barcelona vs Inter Prediction

  • Prediction: Barcelona to win
  • Odds: 1.59 (22Bet)
  • Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-1 Inter

Barcelona need to win the event to maximise their chances of qualification, given their poor record against Inter Milan at San Siro. Their form gives them the edge, but the players are unlikely to be as energetic as they were against Real Madrid due to the tiring 120’.

On the other hand, the visitors are in a similar situation as they played on Sunday afternoon, and will only have two days of rest.

The hosts are deemed favourites due to their mental resilience, having demonstrated they can overturn any score. However, they cannot allow themselves to waste as many chances as they did against Real.

Barcelona vs Inter Betting Tip

  • Pick: Dani Olmo to score
  • Odds: 3.5 (22Bet)

Olmo will likely determine whether Barcelona have an excellent or terrible game, as he’ll act as a playmaker against Inter. His central role means the responsibility to accelerate the team’s tempo will be on his shoulders.

Olmo has struggled with injuries throughout the season, but has also proven his presence is key for the squad. The pockets of space he finds himself in are vital to Barcelona’s tactical domination.
