Barcelona’s worst version of the season has resurfaced at the most crucial point, leading fans to criticise the team’s performance in the second leg against Dortmund. The Catalans advanced to the Champions League semi-finals thanks to a 4-0 victory in the first leg, but lost 3-1 to Borussia.
With the exception of a few talents, everyone had a bad night. Players battled to build up play under pressure at the boiling Signal Iduna Park.
Struggling to stay patient, Barcelona often rushed their counter-attacks and gave away possession cheaply in the most critical moments of the meeting. This was the case of Ronald Araújo, but also of Frenkie de Jong. Players are aware of the criticisms, with Jules Koundé and de Jong admitting to the media after the match that it was a “disappointing performance”.
Similarly to the game against Leganés and the first leg against Dortmund, several key players (Lamine Yamal or Jules Koundé) lacked precision in their actions. This is due to the fatigue accumulated throughout the season.
Alejandro Balde, Marc Bernal, Marc Casadó, and Marc-André Ter Stegen remain out due to injuries.
Barcelona Predicted line-up vs Celta Vigo (4-2-3-1): Szczęsny; Martin, Martínez, Cubarsí, Koundé; Pedri, de Jong; Raphinha, Olmo’ Yamal; Torres.
Celta Vigo are in pole position to grab a European spot outside of the top six, as they sit 7th with 43 points in La Liga, just 5 behind 6th-placed Real Betis. The 2-0 defeat against Espanyol last weekend marked the first loss since February 2nd against Valencia.
Celta Vigo have not featured in any European competition in almost ten years, their last one dating back to the 2016/17 season.
However, they’re not only aiming for these spots for glory: it’s also about future signings. A European position would allow the club to spend more on the market, necessary to keep competing next season.
It’s important to remember that Celta Vigo are close to qualification, but have a demanding schedule in the coming weeks. They will face Barcelona, Villarreal, and Real Madrid.
Carl Starfelt and Jones El-Abdellaoui are out with injuries.
Celta Vigo Predicted line-up vs Barcelona (3-4-3): Guaita; Alonso, Dominguez, Rodriguez; Mingueza, Sotelo, Beltrán, Carreira; A. González, Durán, Aspas.
Bet hereWhile form favours Celta Vigo after only losing once in their previous five matches, Barcelona are expected to win, as reflected by betting odds. The 3-1 defeat against Dortmund provided a much-needed warning message to players that they cannot relax at the most critical time in the season.
Lately, fatigue has been noticeable in most of the players. This may lead to rotations. Some are forced (such as the injury of Balde), while Torres may benefit from more minutes if Lewandowski or Yamal are rested. On top of that, the inclusion of Dani Olmo could be key to more creativity from the midfield.
Celta Vigo usually prefer to counterattack, which could be a suboptimal decision against Barcelona due to the difference in individual quality.
In light of the current schedule, rotations are a possibility to rest the regular starters. One player who has demonstrated to be an excellent squad choice is Ferrán Torres.
His goal instincts in the last quarter of the match have proven to be game-changers. We don’t expect a goal-fest, but Torres could be the player to step up when Barcelona need it most.
