It may seem as if Auxerre will be entering into this French Ligue 1 fixture in the 29th round on the back foot, but they don’t have much to fear.
With the legion of supporters they have, the squad will operate well on the ball, make space for their attackers to push forward, and surprise Lyon with their shape-shifting abilities.
Currently, they rank 10th, and will be keen on moving upwards. Hah-Noah Massengo has been suspended for Sunday’s game, which will worry Auxerre quite a bit. Elisha Owusu, Hamed Traore, Kevin Danois, and Lasso Coulibaly will also be unavailable due to injuries.
Gaëtan Perrin is ranked 3rd in big chances created in the competition (16), and will be keen on evading his markers on the opposition side for as long as possible. If he gets enough time on the ball, he’ll be able to make a difference for the home team.
Thelonius Bair has the most shots on target per match for Auxerre (1.4) and will be another player to keep an eye on.
Auxerre predicted lineup vs Lyon: (3-4-3): Leon; Osho, Jubal, Akpa; Hoever, Owusu, Danois, Oppegard; Perrin, Onaiwu, Traore.
Lyon, currently ranked fifth in the league table, are known for their attacking prowess, with skipper Alexandre Lacazette leading from the front. They will have to defend well against Auxerre, who can latch on to stray balls quickly.
Lyon have been in phenomenal form in front of goal this season, which is evident in their stats. They’ve scored 14 goals in their previous 5 matches.
They come into this game on the back of a season-defining 2-1 win over Lille, and will want to maintain their form for as long as possible.
Having won four of their last five events, Lyon’s momentum will take them ahead. However, Auxerre are an unpredictable side that no one can take lightly.
Ernest Nuamah has been ruled out with an ACL injury and will not be available for the rest of the season. Malick Fofana, who has a sprained knee, will also be absent.
Lyon predicted lineup vs Auxerre: (4-2-3-1): Lucas Perri; Maitland-Niles, Clinton Mata, Niakhate, Tagliafico; Tolisso, Veretout; Nuamah, Cherki, Almada; Lacazette.
Bet hereLyon appear to be the favourites to win this weekend, and we expect them to either do so or draw it comfortably. Their attackers will be licking their lips in anticipation of coming up against the Auxerre defenders, who have conceded 39 goals this season.
The home squad’s goal difference is 0, which makes them prone to conceding at any time during a game.
Lyon have won three out of the seven meetings recorded between these two teams in the past, and have lost on just two occasions.
The rest were played out as drawn encounters. Even the last game between these sides, in October 2024, was a tie.
Despite Auxerre’s unglorified credentials, they have done well in the final third this season. They’ll be expected to torment the Lyon defenders with their possession-based style of play, most of which should feed Onaiwu at the top.
For the visitors, while Lacazette will be one of the biggest threats, Rayan Cherki will be someone who cannot be left unmarked.
He’s ranked 1st in big chances created in the competition (18) and will play the role of the X-factor on Sunday. We anticipate both teams getting on the scoresheet at least once in this match, as happened in the reverse fixture.
