Austria vs Romania Preview and Team News

Austria Team News

Austria’s results come with mixed performances in recent weeks. They finished second in their Nations League group, leading them to a double encounter against Serbia. In the first match, the clubs drew (1-1), while a red card in the second half by Austrian player Gernot Trauner led to the team’s collapse (0-2).

Few would call Ralf Rangnick’s tenure a disaster at the helm of Austria, but his squad have lacked creative flair. He’s known for insisting on an intensive brand of football that relies on the efficiency of counter-pressing. This has indeed proven to be effective against big sides (like in major international tournaments, such as the EUROs). However, it’s led to a lack of creativity on the ball, which has backfired against teams of similar strength.

Austria have been grouped with Bosnia & Herzegovina, Romania, Cyprus, and San Marino for the World Cup Qualifiers. They’re the favourites of the group, but a good start against the guests this weekend is a must, as it’s their first game.

Raul Florucz, David Alaba, and Alexander Schlager will be sidelined with injuries.

Romania Team News

Unlike Austria, this will not be the first encounter in the Qualifiers for Romania. They opened the tournament with a 0-1 loss to Bosnia in an even match-up. The squad were unable to make up for the conceded goal in the 14th minute.

Their meeting against San Marino was without suspense as Romania claimed a 5-1 victory, with two converted goals from the penalty spot.

Romania’s Nations League campaign ended on a good note, but the game against Kosovo implied political controversy. The nation does not recognize the country’s sovereignty. Kosovo players walked off the pitch after they claimed to have heard pro-Serbia chants from Romanian fans, which were denied.

The match was abandoned and UEFA ruled a 3-0 victory in Romania’s favour.

The visitors need a victory after dropping points against Bosnia, as only the first-placed team will advance to the next stage of the tournament. The club are yet to qualify for the World Cup in the 21st century.

Radu Dragusin and Ianis Hagi will be unavailable due to injuries.

Austria vs Romania Prediction

  • Prediction: Draw
  • Odds: 4.66 (22Bet)
  • Score Prediction: Austria 1-1 Romania

Austria will host the game in the hopes of securing a victory in the first match of their campaign, but will have to deal with an offensive team. Hagi may be absent, but Romania demonstrated their level in EURO2024, full of hope and plenty of attacking talent.

However, a victory for the guests is unlikely without Dragusin, who’s been the leader of the team in the backline. They’ll have to face a squad known for their counterpressing quality, although the lack of creativity may cause a problem sealing success for Austria.

Austria vs Romania Betting Tip

  • Pick: Marcel Sabitzer to score
  • Odds: 3.6 (22Bet)

Sabitzer may not be the best player in club football, but he has imposed himself as the team leader in the absence of captain David Alaba. His profile is symbolic of the squad: not the most creative, but a mistake from the opponent is enough to score.

With Grillitsch, he’s the team’s most important pressing outlet, tightly marking his forward. Without Dragusin, Sabitzer is likely to find a chance to punish Romania in counters.
