Atletico Madrid will play their final home match of the La Liga season this weekend, as they look for a vital victory would could put them in contention of finishing the campaign as the runners-up. Osasuna will be the visitors, but a huge change in their fortunes is required.
Atletico Madrid have achieved their primary aim for the 2023-24 season after securing their place in next season’s Champions League in midweek. The Spanish giants will still likely be irritated that they aren’t any closer to the top of the standings, but they remain in contention to finish as high as second before the end of the season.
Atletico are one of the form teams in the competition coming into the penultimate round of matches, as they have picked up victories in each of their last four matches. Only Real Madrid can boast a better recent run of form than their cross-city rivals. The Spanish giants continued their winning sequence in midweek with a dominant 3-0 win on the road against Getafe. Antoine Griezmann was the standout star after netting a treble.
Osasuna appear to have been counting down the days until the end of the season for much of the last month, as their safety has been assured. The Spanish side have shown very little on the field across that period after going five without a win. However, a return to form could at least see them put pressure on the teams in the top half of the standings.
Osasuna have at least avoided defeat in each of their previous two matches in the competition, playing out draws on both recent outings. Their most recent tie was picked up in a home match against Mallorca, with Jon Moncayola opening the scoring after 15 minutes.
Osasuna have a miserable record against Atletico, after winning just once in their last 20 meetings with their rivals across all competitions. Across the same period, Atletico have picked up 18 victories and have averaged 2.2 goals per game.
Atletico have ended the season in excellent form this term, and that makes them very challenging to oppose this weekend. For that reason, we fully expect Atletico to land maximum points in their final home fixture of the 2023-24 season on Sunday.
