Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona Preview and Team News

Atlético Madrid News

Atlético Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Espanyol in Cornellà after an error by Clément Lenglet in the 71st minute. The Frenchman has been reliable throughout the season, but this match was an exception. The team never recovered from his mistake, allowing the rivals to equalize from the penalty spot.

The hosts needed a win to stay in the La Liga race, especially after their Champions League elimination by Real Madrid. The 1-1 draw leaves Atlético Madrid nine points behind leaders Barcelona and seven off second-placed Real Madrid.

Julián Álvarez, José María Giménez, and Rodrigo De Paul were unavailable due to international duty in South America. Although Antoine Griezmann dropped deep to help the team progress, players like Lino lacked precision on the wings to break Espanyol’s block. Despite creating numerous chances, few shots managed to get past goalkeeper Joan García.

Robin Le Normand, who suffered a head knock earlier this season, was forced off against Espanyol after another blow to the head. His availability for Wednesday remains uncertain. Koke is sidelined due to an injury.

Atlético Madrid predicted line-up vs Barcelona

Atlético Madrid predicted line-up vs Barcelona (4-4-2): Oblak; Azpilicueta, Lenglet, Giménez, Llorente; Lino, Gallagher, Barrios, Simeone; Sørloth, Griezmann.

Key Player to Watch Alexander Sørloth
Team Strengths Strong counter-attack, known for mental resilience as an underdog, strong in the last quarter with supersubs
Team Weaknesses Lack of squad depth in certain positions, lack of variety in tactical plans
Key injuries and suspensions. Robin Le Normand (doubtful), Koke

Barcelona Team News

Barcelona used the international break to play their postponed match against Osasuna, which had been delayed after the passing of a medical staff member.

Despite the absence of South American players like Raphinha, Barcelona secured a 3-0 victory. However, the success sparked controversy due to Iñigo Martínez’s participation. Although he had withdrawn from Spain’s squad, he played against Osasuna, leading to an open statement questioning the legality of his involvement.

In Sunday’s event against Girona, Hansi Flick deployed Eric Garcia as a replacement for Frenkie de Jong, on the bench following international duty. His men dominated the game, winning 4-1 thanks to a brace from Robert Lewandowski

Hansi Flick’s greatest challenge will be to decide when to rotate, given that they’ll play against Atlético Madrid, Real Betis, and Dortmund in the next ten days.

While Barcelona are still on for the treble, their limited squad depth will force Flick to make decisions, especially as Lamine Yamal featured in Spain’s matches and will need rest.

With no obvious replacement for him and Dani Olmo, Flick must manage his charges carefully to avoid further injuries that could derail Barcelona’s season.

Andreas Christensen, Dani Olmo, Marc Bernal, Marc Casadó, and Marc-André Ter Stegen remain out due to injuries.

Barcelona predicted line-up vs Atlético Madrid

Barcelona predicted line-up vs Atlético Madrid (4-2-3-1): Szczęsny; Balde, Cubarsí, Araújo, Koundé; Pedri, de Jong; Raphinha, López, Yamal; Lewandowski.

Key Player to Watch Lamine Yamal
Team Strengths Strong counter-attacking principles, superior individual quality, strong reactions when things go wrong, creating chances
Team Weaknesses Lack of squad depth, overemphasis on one type of plan
Key injuries and suspensions. Andreas Christensen, Dani Olmo, Marc Bernal, Marc Casadó, and Marc-André Ter Stegen

Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona United Head-to-Head Statistics

Aside from El Clásico, this rivalry has been the most important in La Liga. Out of 58 games, Barcelona won 33 times while Atlético Madrid claimed 12 wins. The two teams drew on 13 occasions, with the latest one last month, a 4-4 draw.

Barcelona dominated the meeting, leading 2-0, but dropped points in the last quarter of the match, as Atlético Madrid came back to 4-4. Diego Simeone’s men last defeated Barcelona in La Liga in December 2024, winning 2-1 despite being outplayed.

Flick’s squad won their most recent encounter 4-2 two weeks ago. Despite dominating, they trailed 2-0 with fifteen minutes remaining in the first half. However, goals from Lewandowski, Ferrán Torres, and Lamine Yamal secured a 4-2 victory in additional time.

Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona Player Focus

While Antoine Griezmann would seem to be the obvious choice, Sørloth has tormented Barcelona in the past. He claimed he knew he would score against them in December (when Atlético won 2-1). There is little doubt he’ll come with similar spirits at the match on Wednesday, counting on the support of the Metropolitano.

On Barcelona’s side, Yamal will once again be the choice. Atlético play well in the wings, but both of their wing-backs find it tricky to defend against counterattacks. Lino struggles to make an impact against Espanyol, which could be the ideal scenario for Lamine to dominate his flank.

Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona Analysis

Diego Simeone is yet to find a viable strategy against Barcelona under Hansi Flick. Although results ranged from victory to defeat through a questionable draw, the guests dominated every encounter. Simeone will want to take advantage of the Metropolitano to change that, counting on the support of the fans.

Barcelona’s tactics are known, but remain difficult to stop. They’re likely to rely on the Pedri-Lamine Yamal-Lewandowski chain to create an advantage. Raphinha was always a difficult element to control in the penalty box.

Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona Prediction

  • Prediction: Barcelona to win
  • Odds: 2.39 (22Bet)
  • Score Prediction: Atlético Madrid 1-2 Barcelona

Atlético need a win more than Barcelona, but it’s unlikely to happen on Wednesday.. Simeone’s team are almost certainly out of the La Liga race after the 1-1 debacle against Espanyol, and must win the Copa del Rey to avoid a trophyless season.

However, they’ll face a difficult opponent who have thrived against them, even at the Metropolitano.

A lot also depends on whether the South Americans make it for the match, but chances are that they’ll remain insufficient against Barcelona. The Catalans have not lost to Atlético Madrid since late December.

Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona Betting Tip

  • Pick: Ferrán Torres to score
  • Odds: 3.95 (22Bet)

While Lewandowski and Yamal are expected to score, Ferrán Torres has established himself as a reliable supersub in the second half.

Despite limited starts, he’s contributed over 20 goals and assists, underscoring his importance when teammates tire. It would hardly be surprising if he were to land on the scoresheet once more.
