Athletic made a surprise move by securing the most expensive deal of the winter transfer window in La Liga by signing Maroan Sannadi. The squad is known for its rigorous basque-only policy. Though the son of immigrants, this talent was born in Vitoria, within the Basque region. He previously played for Deportivo Alavés and became the most expensive contract of the club’s history, with 4.5M euros.
The home side remain fourth in La Liga despite drawing with Leganés and Betis in their last two matches. The final encounter was emotional, as Athletic were left trailing behind twice.
A set-piece goal from Álex Berenguer, however, saved the day. This squad are one of the most successful teams from set-pieces, having scored seven goals this term out of dead-ball situations.
Álvaro Djélé picked up an injury against Betis and is expected to miss Saturday’s game, while Nico Williams remains in recovery. His availability will depend on how his recuperation progresses.
Athletic Club predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Simón, Lekue, Paredes, Vivian, Gorosabel, Jauregizar, Vesga, Berenguer, Sancet, Iñaki Williams, Unai Gómez.
Girona are still adjusting to their new reality after key players Sávio de Oliveira and Artem Dovbyk departed last summer.
The side rank 7th in La Liga. Last season, they made club history by qualifying for the Champions League for the first time. Their initial campaign, however, has been a heartbreaking one. They’re failing to qualify for the playoffs, having only won one event in eight.
At the same time, this season has seen a phenomenal Cristhian Stuani. The striker was part of the squad that earned promotion from the second division. Due to his age (38) preventing him from playing full matches, he now acts as a super sub. Despite not starting a single La Liga game, he’s still managed to score four goals.
Girona have been strengthened with the incoming loan of Arthur, who previously played for Barcelona before joining Juventus.
Daley Blind and Oriol Romeu remain sidelined through injury.
Girona predicted lineup (4-3-3): Gazzaniga, Gutiérrez, Krejčí, Juanpe, Arnau Martínez, Ivan Mártin, Van de Beek, Herrera, Gil, Ábel Ruiz, Tsygankov.
Bet hereSan Mamés is considered one of the toughest away grounds in La Liga due to its intense atmosphere. Athletic Club rarely fail to find the net, both domestically and in Europe.
The hosts are one of the most aggressive pressing teams, frequently pushing high up the pitch to regain possession. While Girona are also offensively efficient, their defensive record could be an issue.
Nico Williams may not recover in time, as he did not feature against Betis, but the presence of Álex Berenguer should be enough to worry the visitors.
Sancet has been central to Ernesto Valverde’s system since his return to Athletic Club following a spell at Barcelona. The Basque midfielder is responsible for attacking in zone 14, which makes him a crucial player between the defensive lines. With Girona struggling to keep the boat afloat defensively, this could be Sancet’s chance to score.
