Athletic Club’s hunt for a Champions League finish ended in midweek following a shock defeat on the road. However, they will be looking to achieve a successful end to their home season on Sunday when they welcome Sevilla to Bilbao.
The 2023-24 season will be remembered as a hugely successful one for Bilbao, with the main reason for that due to their success in the Copa del Rey. However, their league performances have dropped since winning the domestic honour, and that has negatively impacted their chances of finishing in a Champions League position this term.
Bilbao now look set to finish fifth in the standings, which will secure a place in next year’s Europa League. However, the team will be hoping to end the season on a high note. They come into this penultimate weekend of action after losing two of their last four, while they have recorded just a single win over that period. Bilbao were last in action in midweek, losing 2-1 on the road against Celta Vigo.
It has been another testing campaign for Sevilla this term, as the Spanish giants were fighting at the wrong end of the standings throughout the first half of the campaign. They come into this round of matches sitting 12th, meaning that only a victory will keep their realistic hope of a top half finish alive this term.
But, they will need to bounce back to form in the competition after suffering defeats in each of their last two. That run of form has come after going three without a defeat in Spain. Their most recent outing ended in a disappointing home loss against Cadiz on Wednesday, with the visitors netting the winner in the 96th minute.
Bilbao landed a memorable 2-0 away win against Sevilla in the reverse fixture this term, which ended a four-game winless sequence against their rivals. Sevilla have won on each of their last two trips to Bilbao, which includes a 1-0 success in this exact fixture last term.
Bilbao appear to have run out of steam at this late stage of the season, while Sevilla’s performances have also dropped off in recent weeks. Therefore, we could see an interesting angle this weekend being for the draw in La Liga.
