The race for the Champions League positions in La Liga heats up once again this weekend, as Atletico Madrid chase a third straight victory. However, they will need to pick themselves up for this trip to Alaves after dropping out of the Champions League in midweek.
It will be an important end to the season for Atletico Madrid, as the Spanish giants will be looking to finish the campaign in the Champions League positions. They come into this round sitting in fourth spot, but they only hold a four-point advantage over Athletic Bilbao.
However, Atletico boasts the better form coming into this round of matches after winning each of their last two fixtures. But, they will quickly need to pick themselves up after being dumped out of the Champions League in midweek by Borussia Dortmund. Atletico were fine winners in their most recent domestic fixture, landing a 3-1 home success against Girona. Antoine Griezmann was in standout form in that clash after netting twice. Angel Correa also netted, meaning he has scored twice in his last two matches.
Alaves will still have one eye over their shoulders at this stage, as they are just seven points clear of the relegation places with seven matches remaining. Their recent form would also be a slight concern ahead of this fixture at home, as they have suffered defeats in each of their last three matches.
Alaves were last beaten in their previous fixture, suffering a 2-0 away defeat against Granada. The visitors were poor in that fixture, conceding twice inside the opening 40 minutes. They will need to defend much better in this weekend’s fixture against Atletico.
Atletico have claimed victories in each of their last two matches against Alaves, which includes a 2-1 success in the previous clash this term. However, Alaves were standout winners in this exact fixture last term after landing a 1-0 home success against their rivals. Atletico have claimed just one victory in their last three visits to Alaves.
Alaves have found wins hard to come by in recent months in La Liga, and this makes this a challenging clash against Atletico on Sunday. Therefore, we expect the away team to have the quality to claim maximum points on Sunday in Spain’s top flight.
