Fiorentina bring the curtain down on an extremely competitive domestic season on Sunday, as they travel to Sassuolo just days before their Europa Conference League final against West Ham. Sassuolo will be looking to end the season on a high after failing to win in five.
It has been an excellent season for Fiorentina this term, but there is still some way to go before the players will be preparing for their summer holidays. The team from Florence still has a huge match on the agenda next week, as they face West Ham United in the final of the Europa Conference League. However, they will be looking to go into that final in solid form, as they have won two of their last three matches in Serie A.
Fiorentina can’t finish in a European position in Serie A, as they aren’t able to finish any higher than eighth in the standings. A victory this weekend would put them on course for that finish, and confidence will be high after landing a 2-1 home win over AS Roma in Serie A last weekend.
Sassuolo will be happy to see the back of this season, as they have struggled for consistency throughout the campaign. The Italian side will finish the campaign in the bottom half of the standings, and a finish in 12th is the best that they can manage. A victory this weekend would see them end on a high, but they come into the fixture in poor recent form.
Sassuolo has gone five without a win in Italy, losing three matches over that period. A defeat this weekend could see them end the campaign in 15th, which would be classed as a huge disappointment. Last weekend, they picked up a dramatic 2-2 draw on the road against Sampdoria.
Fiorentina landed a 2-1 win in the reverse clash between the sides this season. That victory ended a five-match winless run against Sassuolo. The hosts hold the advantage in previous clashes, having won three of the previous six.
The fact that this fixture comes just days before Fiorentina’s European final against West Ham is hard to ignore. We expect the visitors to rest a number of their key players, which means that a chance will be taken on Sassuolo to end the season with a much-needed victory.
