There will be pressure on Thomas Tuchel coming into the midweek round of matches in the Bundesliga before Christmas. The reigning champions remain second in the standings, and they will desperately require maximum points on the road against Wolfsburg on Wednesday.
Bayern Munich will be back in Bundesliga action this week, just days after bouncing back to winning ways with a straightforward 3-0 success at home against Stuttgart. Harry Kane was among the scorers in that success for the Bavarian giants, as the England captain took his tally for the campaign beyond 20 after just 14 appearances.
However, Munich are in a race for the title this term, with Bayer Leverkusen setting a blistering pace that they will need to match. Bayern come into this midweek round sitting four points off the pace, but they do have the added benefit of a game in hand over the league leaders. Interestingly, Bayern have made their best start to a Bundesliga season since 2015-16 this term, but they will be looking to avoid losing back-to-back away matches for the first time since May 2015 on Wednesday.
Wolfsburg are among the contenders in the race for a European finish this term, as they currently sit down in ninth in the standings. However, a victory against Bayern on Wednesday would see them close the gap on the top six spots to just a point, depending on other results in the competition.
The hosts bounced back to winning ways with a success in their previous fixture, which ended a two-game losing sequence in the competition. Wolfsburg will need to play out their matches much better if they are to finish in a European place this term, as they have scored the fewest goals in the second period in the Bundesliga in 2023-24.
Bayern Munich have recorded goals in each of their last 30 Bundesliga matches against Wolfsburg. Meanwhile, they have won 14 of the last 16 league meetings between the sides to average 2.5 points per game against their rivals.
Wolfsburg’s disappointing record against Bayern is extremely hard to overlook when assessing the most likely outcome this week. Therefore, we will be siding with the reigning champions to land victory on the road to close the gap on the top of the Bundesliga standings.
