Chelsea and West Ham both kicked off their Premier League campaigns with draws on the opening weekend. However, both will be looking to get in the win column for the first time this campaign when they lock horns at the London Stadium on Sunday.
It has been another busy week at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues smashing the British-record transfer fee following the arrival of Moises Caicedo. However, that is unlikely to be their only signing before the game at the London Stadium, as a move for Romeo Lavia is edging closer. Mauricio Pochettino would have been happy with his side’s performance in their opening match, as they played out a draw against Liverpool.
The Blues were outplayed in the opening half an hour, but their equaliser was netted against the run of play by Axel Disasi after 37 minutes. From that minute on, Chelsea looked like the more likely winner, as they dominated the possession and created the better goal scoring opportunities. However, they will need to be more clinical in the final third this weekend.
West Ham were unfortunate not to have claimed maximum points on the opening weekend, as they played out a draw against Bournemouth. The Hammers opened the scoring early in the first half through Jarrod Bowen, but they were pegged back with just eight minutes remaining.
West Ham played defensively in that clash, as they mustered just 37% of the possession. The home fans at the London Stadium will be hoping for a more expansive display against the Blues this weekend, as they look to avoid getting dragged into a relegation scrap at the wrong end of the standings this term.
Chelsea are unbeaten in three league matches against the Hammers. However, this exact fixture last season ended in a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium. West Ham’s last win over Chelsea was recorded in December 2021, as they secured a 3-2 success in front of their home fans.
A big performance will be expected from Chelsea this weekend after the business that they have conducted off the field. We expect them to have the quality to land maximum points this weekend, but we expect just one goal to be the difference between the sides.
