Another weekend and another round of exciting fixtures from the most-watched club football competition in the world: the red-hot English Premier League. The bulk of this weekend’s fixtures are on Saturday, with no fewer than seven games on the schedule. There you’ll find the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Tottenham in home action.
What Sunday’s schedule lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for in quality. There are two games to follow on Super Sunday as West Ham host Arsenal in East London at the former Olympic Stadium before Aston Villa welcome Manchester United to Villa Park following a midweek FA Cup replay against Chelsea at the same venue. Two great games, but this preview focuses on the game in Stratford.
West Ham United started this season with hopes of landing a European finish, either in the Champions League or Europa League. A top-four berth is the preference, but much work is needed to get the Hammers into the prize places from their current position. The home team started the week seventh in the table, with their stats for the season showing ten wins, six draws, and seven defeats. They scored 36 goals and conceded just as many.
Despite their lofty position and 36 points on the board, West Ham is winless in its last four games, following three draws on the bounce with a weekend defeat. It was last in EPL action on Sunday, losing 3-0 at Old Trafford in a game many respected pundits thought it could win. Manchester United isn’t at its strongest, but it nailed the Hammers without encountering much resistance.
Arsenal came close to winning the league last season and aimed to go one better this term, improving a place to finally get their hands on the Premier League title once again. They are in the midst of a thrilling title race involving five teams: Liverpool, Man City, Aston Villa, and Tottenham. There’s still plenty of football ahead this season, but Mikel Arteta’s men are in the mix, and fans can’t ask any more from their favourites.
Bet hereArsenal arrives in East London on the back of a three-game winning run, taking a maximum of nine points. Their most recent win was on Sunday when they beat Liverpool 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium, a result that blew the title race wide open. It was a more competitive game than the scoreline suggests, but Arsenal fully deserved their goals, the victory, and the three points. The Gunners are now just two points behind leaders Liverpool in the title race.
West Ham holds the home advantage, but their recent form is woeful, taking just three points from the last dozen available. They lost at the weekend and now face a potential champion in neighbours Arsenal. The signs all point to an away win, but we know anything can happen in London derbies, especially where the Hammers and Gunners are involved.
It’s easy to appreciate Arteta’s good work at Arsenal, and few would grudge the former Rangers midfielder a title if he were to go on and lift the Premier League trophy. The Gunners are strong in defence, have a flair for the attack, and can score goals. If they play anywhere near the level we saw from them at the weekend, this could be a strong away win for Arsenal at the London Stadium.
