Two teams that look set for a battle in the middle of the table in the Bundesliga will meet this weekend, as Hoffenheim travel to Werder Bremen. But, which team will be able to end the weekend above their rivals?
It has been a steady start to the season for Werder Bremen, as they look to banish the memories of their fight against relegation last term. The early season form would indicate that it looks unlikely that they will be in that same position again this term, as they have already won two from four league games.
They will also come into this fixture in good confidence, as they haven’t lost since the opening day of the season. Since then, they have gone three games unbeaten. The most recent of those matches was a 1-1 draw against Freiburg. Both of the goals in this game came in the first half, with Phillip Lienhart putting Freiburg ahead. Bremen were able to level the scored 20 minutes before half time from the penalty spot, as Niclas Fulkrug converted from 12 yards.
Hoffenheim are just one place below Bremen in the league standings at present, but they will be aware that a win this weekend will be enough to see them go above their rivals. They started the season off in excellent form by winning two on the bounce, but since then they have lost their last two games in the Bundesliga. They have scored eight goals in their four games, and conceded six times. Hoffenheim’s last defeat in the Bundesliga came against Borussia Dortmund, but they returned to winning ways in the Europa League with a success against Crvena Zvezda. Christoph Baumgartner scored the opener in that game, before Mu’nas Dabbur doubled the lead in injury time.
Hoffenheim have won the last two matches against Werder Bremen, as they have scored a total of six goals. The last meeting between the sides came back in January, as Hoffenheim ran out comfortable 3-0 winners. Bremen’s last win in this fixture came back in May 2019.
Both of these sides will be confident of getting the win in this fixture, but Hoffenheim’s recent win in the Europa League highlights that they have turned a corner this season. We expect them to continue that form with another win this weekend.
