Group D could be one of the most testing groups in EURO qualification, as four of the teams involved may feel as though they have a chance of finishing in one of the top two places. Two of the nations that could be in that hunt for qualifying will clash on Tuesday evening in Cardiff.
This has been an unprecedented period of success for Wales in terms of qualification, as they have reached a World Cup and a European Championship in the previous ten years. They will be among the front runners once again to earn a spot in the top two places this year, but they will have to be at their very best to finish above either Croatia or Turkey.
Rob Page would have been delighted with his side’s performance in their opening match in Group D, as they hit back in the final stages to earn a dramatic point away from home against Croatia. Nathan Broadhead was the hero that netted the leveller in the 93rd minute, which was also the team’s only shot on target.
This will be Latvia’s first match in Group D on Tuesday, as they didn’t have a match in the opening round of fixtures over the weekend. The nation will be aware that they face an uphill challenge to book a spot at the European Championships, as it is a feat that they have managed just once in their history.
Latvia did enjoy a steady campaign in Nations League Division D last year, as they registered four wins from the six matches that they played to earn promotion. However, whether they can compete against some of the best on the continent remains up for debate.
This is only the second time that Wales and Latvia have clashed in an international fixture. The previous meeting took place in a friendly in August 2004, with Wales registered a comfortable 2-0 win on the road.
Wales was excellent in their opening match against Croatia, as they showed fighting quality to battle back and win a point. They will be expected to take another step in the right direction on Tuesday, and we expect them to run out comfortable winners against Latvia in Cardiff.
