There will be competitive action in La Liga on Monday, as Atletico Madrid bid to get their campaign back on track when they visit Villarreal. The hosts come into this round in excellent form after winning each of their last four in the Spanish top flight.
The pressure will be back on Atletico Madrid when they return to action following the international break on Monday. The Spanish giants have dropped outside of the Champions League positions following a poor run of form, and only a victory on the road this weekend will lift them back into the top four positions in the league standings.
However, Atletico will need to put a poor run of results behind them when they continue their push for a Champions League position. They come into this round after losing each of their last two matches in the competition, and they could kick off on Monday trailing Athletic Bilbao by four points. Atletico were well below their usual high standards in their previous outing after suffering a 3-0 home loss against Barcelona.
Villarreal come into the first round of matches following the latest international break in a very strong position. The Spanish side sit ninth in the standings after winning each of their last four matches in the competition. Their recent form could see them emerge as a late contender for a European finish, but they are currently eight points off the top six places.
Villarreal were excellent in their most recent match in the competition, claiming a 1-0 home success against Valencia. It was the very least that they deserved in that fixture after dominating from the opening minute. Their winning goal was netted early in the second half by Jorge Cuenca.
Draws have been a common result when these sides have collided in La Liga. Three of the last five clashes have ended level, which includes a 2-2 tie in this exact fixture last season. Atletico were strong in the reverse clash this term, landing a 3-1 home success in November.
Atletico will desperately need to get their season back on track on Monday, and they could be primed to do that. We struggle to support the home win, as Villarreal are winless in their last five home matches against their Spanish rivals since a 2-1 success in March 2018.
