Two countries that will be hoping to reach the next round of the Copa America will clash on Sunday evening, as Venezuela and Ecuador look to take a stride towards qualification by claiming three points.
Venezuela have started narrowly better than Ecuador in Copa America at this early stage, as they have taken one point from the two games that they have played. That means that they currently sit in third place, which is comfortably in the positions that will see them through to the next round. However, unlike other nations in Group A at Copa America, they have played on two occasions already this year.
They opened their campaign with a heavy 3-0 defeat against Brazil, but they responded to that opening night setback with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Colombia. Venezuela defended excellently in that game and frustrated Colombia from the opening minute. It never looked like they were going to try and find the winner, as they didn’t register a single shot on target and only had 35% of the possession.
This will be Ecuador’s second game of the Copa America this summer, but they will be hoping for a better result than the one that they got against Colombia in their opening game. They were beaten by their rivals on Monday evening, which means that they come into their final games needing positive results to make sure that they make it through.
The defeat also means that Ecuador have now lost their last three in all competitions. That run also includes defeats against Brazil and Peru. Ecuador will need to get a positive result from this game, with crunch fixtures against Peru and Brazil coming up next week.
Ecuador hold a narrow advantage in the overall record as they have won 16 times. Venezuela have won on eleven occasions, and there have been five draws. The last two meetings have both been international friendlies, and have both ended in 1-1 draws.
History could repeat itself in this fixture, as it looks extremely difficult to predict a winner. The draw could be the best selection, as it will keep the hopes of both nations alive ahead of the final games that they have coming up in the group stage.
