Two sides that would have been expecting to be much higher in the league table will meet this weekend in La Liga, but will Atletic Bilbao or Valencia be able to take the points to move them away from the relegation places?
The finances at Valencia have been one of the most talked about things in Spain over the past year, and that led to them having to sell a number of their best players to stay afloat. There was early season optimism around the club after they started the season well, but that has come to a halting end over recent weeks, as they have slipped further down the league standings. Valencia will come into this match on Saturday having won just once in six. However, they have still been fairly difficult to beat, as they have lost just once in five league games. The only defeat that they have suffered during this run came at home to Atletico Madrid, but they bounced back by claiming a 0-0 draw against Eibar. However, the 13 points that they have accumulated means that they are just two points outside of the relegation places.
Bilbao find themselves in a similar position to Valencia, as they also sit just two points outside of the bottom three. They have also been struggling for form this season, as they have lost three of their last six games. The most recent of those defeats came last time out against Celta Vigo. It was an underwhelming performance by the hosts in that game, as they failed to register a single shot on target against Celta Vigo. Both the goals that they conceded came in the final half an hour of the game.
Valencia have a dominant record in fixtures against Athletic Bilbao, as they have won four of the previous seven. However, they were beaten by their rivals this weekend in the most recent fixture between the sides. Bilbao claimed a first win away from home against Valencia in 13 years in July.
This is a difficult match to predict, as both sides have been inconsistent throughout La Liga so far this season. However, Valencia have lost just twice at home against Bilbao in 15 years, which means that a home win could be the most likely result.
