The showpiece match of the U20 World Cup will take place on Sunday, as Italy clash with Uruguay at La Plata, Argentina. It promises to be a thrilling match between the two standout sides in the competition this year.
There’s little doubt that the two standout nations at the U20 World Cup will be competing in the final this year. Italy has been the star performing nation throughout the tournament, and the nation will be chasing a first U20 World Cup victory in their history. Surprisingly, this is the first time that they have reached the semi-final stage, but they have come over some sizable hurdles to reach this stage.
Italy finished second in their group stage campaign, managing to secure second courtesy of a one-goal better difference than Nigeria. Their only defeat was suffered against the African nation in the second round of matches in the Group D. However, their performance levels in the knockout round has excelled. Italy eliminated England in the round of 16, before seeing off Colombia in the quarterfinals. They then scored a late winner to see off South Korea in the final four.
Uruguay will be competing in the U20 World Cup final for the third time in their history, but they are yet to win the event. Their most recent appearance in the final game in 2013, as they were beaten in the showpiece match by France.
The South American giants also finished second in their group stage campaign, as they won two of their opening three matches, with their only loss coming against England. Uruguay have had a slightly easier route to the final, as they edged past Gambia in the round of 16, before beating the United States and Israel in the quarterfinals and semi-finals, respectively.
This will be the third clash between Italy and Uruguay at U20 level, with each of the previous two coming at the 2017 U20 World Cup. Uruguay landed a victory in the opening match between the sides, before a 0-0 draw was played out between the sides in normal time in the latter match between the teams.
This should be an enjoyable U20 World Cup final between these two talented nations. However, we find it challenging to overlook Italy, who have overcome stiffer challenges to reach this stage of the competition.
