The crucial second legs in the last eight of the Europa League take place this week. Union Saint-Gilloise has been one of the stories of the competition to this point, and they will have home advantage to get them over the line on Thursday when they take on Bayer Leverkusen.
There is still everything to play for in this Europa League showdown between Union Saint-Gilloise and Bayer Leverkusen. The sides played out an entertaining 1-1 draw when they met for the first time last week, with Florian Wirtz scoring a dramatic equalising goal with just eight minutes remaining.
Union appeared to be heading toward one of their biggest wins in history, as Victor Boniface opened the scoring six minutes into the second half. Few could have argued against the Belgian side deserving a historic win, as they dominated the play throughout the first leg, and potentially should have been further ahead heading into the final ten minutes.
Union has been no strangers to German opposition throughout this season, as they will play a German club for the third straight home game on Thursday. In their previous clashes, they have landed two wins and one draw. The Belgian side also has an excellent record when their home advantage has come in the second leg of a European competition, as they have progressed from all previous three.
Leverkusen may have missed a golden opportunity to take hold of this tie, as they have struggled away from home in recent seasons against Belgian opposition. They are winless in their last three trips to Belgian, with their only win coming in the Champions League in November 1997 against K. Lierse SK.
This will only be the second time that these sides have squared off. The previous meeting came last week, with the sides sharing two goals in a 1-1 draw. However, Union has won two of their previous three home matches against German opposition.
Union’s record when having home advantage in the second leg is fascinating. However, we could see them paying the price for missed chances in the first clash between the sides. Therefore, we could see Leverkusen progressing through to a first European semi-final since 2001-02 on Thursday evening in Belgium.
