Round of 16 action in the DFB Pokal takes centre stage in Germany this week, and a standout tie will see the in-form Union Berlin host Wolfsburg. The hosts will be looking to better their run to the semi-final stage last season.
This should be an exciting game in the Germany cup competition this week, as there is a realistic chance that both Wolfsburg and Union Berlin could be dark horse selections to make the final this term. Few German sides have caught the imagination as much as Union this term, as they sit second in the Bundesliga standings, just a point behind Bayern Munich.
Union has won eleven games this term, which is the most of any side in Germany’s top-flight division. It seems a lifetime ago since Union were in action in the DFB Pokal, as they eased through to the round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Heidenheim in October. Tymoteusz Puchacz opened the scoring in that win after seven minutes, before Sven Michel ensured the victory early in the second half.
Wolfsburg had been in excellent form up until the most recent games in the Bundesliga, where their ten-game unbeaten run was brought to an end. Still, they remain in a very strong position in the league standings, as they currently sit just five points off the Champions League spots. However, a major piece of silverware would certainly highlight an excellent campaign for Wolves.
Wolfsburg avoided a scare in the previous round of the competition, as they only just managed to see off the challenge of Eintracht Braunschweig. Mattias Svanberg scored the opener for Wolves, but their place in the next round wasn’t assured until Jakub Kaminski scored the second goal with 25 minutes remaining.
Each of the previous four meetings between these sides have been won by the team playing at home. Union has won twice over that period, with Wolfsburg claiming victories in the other two games played in their home stadium. Meanwhile, there hasn’t been an away success in this fixture in the previous five.
This should be a high quality game in the round of 16 stage, and cases can be made for both teams. However, we will be siding with the in-form Union to keep alive their hopes of DFB Pokal glory this term.
