There will be a rematch from the group stages of the Europa League in the last 16 this week, as Union Berlin and Union Saint-Gilloise clash for the third time this season. Each of the previous two meetings have been low-scoring affairs, and there isn’t much to suggest that this Thursday’s meeting will be any different.
It has been a stunning campaign for Union Berlin, as they will still have their sights set on a Champions League finish in the Bundesliga. However, a major piece of silverware could be their big target this term, and a success in the Europa League would have been largely unexpected across the continent before a ball was kicked this season.
One of the biggest wins in Union’s history was picked up a few weeks ago, as they managed to eliminate multiple-time European champions Ajax in the playoff round. It was a pulsating affair between the two sides, with the German side eventually claiming a 3-1 win on the night. Robin Knoche opened the scoring, before Josip Juranovic and Danilho Doekhi added further goals either side of the half time break.
Union Saint-Gilloise were also one of the standout teams in the first half of the Europa League season, as they topped a competitive Group D, which also included Union Berlin and Braga. The Belgian side picked up four wins from their six games, and scored a very impressive eleven goals across their group stage fixtures.
They eventually finish a point clear of Union to sail through to this stage of the competition without the need for a playoff. All three of their away matches in the group stage saw them run out winners, which included road victories over Union, Braga, and Malmo.
There have only been two previous meetings between these teams, with both taking place in the group stage. Union were 1-0 winners in the most recent fixture in November, while this exact fixture was won 1-0 by Union Saint-Gilloise on matchday one in September.
Both of the previous meetings between these sides this season have been extremely tight, and we would expect nothing less on Thursday. However, we expect Union to make their home advantage count this week, and a 1-0 win may be the most likely outcome.
