Union Berlin enjoyed a memorable campaign last term, as they secured a Champions League finish for the first time in their history. They face a challenging opening day assignment to kick off the 2023-24 campaign on Sunday, as they lock horns with Mainz.
The 2022-23 season will be one that lives long in the memory for Union Berlin. They topped the German top-flight for the first time in their history early in the campaign, before landing a Champions League spot for the first time. Union will be looking to build on that hugely progressive showing this term, but a second straight finish in the top four appears to be a huge challenge.
They will take pride from the fact that they are the only representative in the top-flight from the capital this term, following Hertha Berlin’s relegation in 2022-23. Union have strengthened the squad with some interesting additions this summer, including Brenden Aaronson from Leeds, David Fofana from Chelsea, and Robin Gosens from Inter Milan.
Mainz also exceeded expectations in 2022-23, as they easily steered clear of the relegation places to finish in the top half of the standings. Ultimately, they finished just four points off the European spots, and a renewed effort for a place in the top seven this term will be their main goal for the season ahead.
The German side have been able to add quality to their squad this summer, as they have brought in Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg on a loan deal and Tom Krauss from RB Leipzig. They made a winning start to their domestic calendar last weekend, as they edged over the line to secure a 1-0 win over SV Elversberg in the DFB Pokal. Their only goal was scored from the penalty spot by Ludovic Ajorque.
Union boasts an excellent record in this fixture, as they have lost just once in eight matches against Mainz. Interestingly, Union have only picked up more points against one other team in the Bundesliga than Mainz.
Union will have high hopes ahead of a huge season. This is a fixture that they have historically excelled in, and it may be worth siding with those trends when making selections this weekend. Therefore, we will be siding with Union starting their season with a victory.
