A crucial game in the Bundesliga takes place in the German capital on Saturday, as Union Berlin look to end their disappointing run of form. Eintracht Frankfurt will be the visitors, as they look to stretch their unbeaten run in the competition to four matches.
The memories of last season’s charge to the Champions League spots feels like a distant memory at this stage for Union Berlin, as they are battling at the wrong end of the standings at this early point. The capital club come into this weekend sitting just a point above the bottom three places in the league standings after losing seven of their opening nine matches.
Their recent form would also be a considerable concern coming into this home match, as they have suffered defeats in each of their previous five matches. Union’s losing run was extended on the road last weekend, as they were easily beaten 2-0 by Werder Bremen. They will also be without Rani Khedira this weekend, who was sent off in Bremen with half an hour remaining last weekend.
Things are looking much better for Eintracht Frankfurt at this stage of the season, as they sit seventh in the league standings. However, they have recorded just three victories from their opening nine matches. But, Frankfurt has suffered just a single defeat this term, with draws being a regular issue for the club.
That was evident once again last weekend, as they played out a fifth draw of the season already. But, confidence would have been taken from that performance against Borussia Dortmund, with Omar Marmoush netting twice in a 3-3 draw.
Home wins have been very common when these sides have clashed, with each of the previous six being won by the side with home advantage. Over that period, Union have picked up two victories, with Frankfurt landed four wins. The last away win in this fixture came in February 2020, as Union landed a shock 2-1 win in Frankfurt.
Despite struggling for victories in recent weeks, it could be argued that Union’s performances haven’t been as bad as their league position suggests. This could be the weekend when it all clicks back into gear, and a chance is taken on the capital club to get back to winning ways.
