There will be a high-stakes match-up on Monday afternoon, as both Ukraine and Austria still have a chance of reaching the next round of the EUROs. It looks set to be a cagey affair, but which side will get the positive result they need?
Ukraine and Austria have both picked up three points from the two games that they have played in Group C. But, it will be winner takes all in the fixture between the nations on Monday afternoon. Ukraine could come into the game with slightly more momentum, as they have scored more goals than Austria in the competition to this point. They picked up their first victory at the tournament on the second matchday, as they narrowly avoided a scare against North Macedonia.
Andriy Yarmolenko continued his excellent form this summer by scoring the opening goal in the contest before the half-hour mark. Roman Yaremchuk made sure of the win just five minutes later, which gave Macedonia a mountain to climb to get back into the game. The opposition did pull a goal back, but Ukraine were able to hold them off with ease to get the victory.
Austria also played their second game in Group C on Thursday evening, but they were easily beaten by The Netherlands. They never really put up much of a fight in that fixture, which was unlike Ukraine when they faced the same opposition. The Dutch scored early against Austria, which effectively scuppered any gameplan that they would have had for the fixture. Still, their opening night win against Macedonia means that they remain in a strong position to reach the next round of the competition, and a win would be enough to see them finish in second.
This will be the third meeting between Ukraine and Austria. However, it will be the first meeting between the nations in nine years. The last meeting was an international friendly in June 2012, which was won 3-2 by Austria. Ukraine won the only other game between the nations in 2011.
Ukraine and Austria will both be aware of the stakes that will be on the line in this fixture on Monday. That means neither side will want to be beaten, as a draw could be good enough to see both nations get through. Therefore, a 0-0 draw could be a good bet for this fixture.
