Uganda vs Togo Prediction: African Nations Match on 22.01.2021

The second of two matches from the African Cup of Nations on Friday sees Uganda take on Togo in what is sure to be a compelling group game. With both sides targeting a win to boost their chances of remaining in the competition armchair fans tuning into the live play from 19:00 GMT are sure to be entertaining. But which side will come out on top?

Uganda and Togo have met a total of seven times in the past on competitive action and it’s the latter that have dominated over the years. The head-to-head stats stand at five wins for Togo with Uganda claiming the other two. The most recent clash ended in a hard-fought 1-0 for the dominant side back in 2016 in a friendly match.

Cranes written off

Uganda are ranked 79th in the world by FIFA and have played in the African Nations seven times in the past, first making it onto the main stage in 1962. Their best effort to date was recorded in 1978 when finishing as runners up. Fans would dearly love to see their side go a step further this year, but Uganda have been written off as outsiders by many experts.

The Cranes held on for a decent 1-1 draw against Kenya in an international friendly match in the summer of 2019 but haven’t done much of note since. They did record an upset 2-0 win over DR Congo in this competition back in June 2019 and the players will hope to reach those levels again.

Togo have qualified eight times

Togo sit well below their opponents in the FIFA world rankings, coming in no higher than 128th. They have appeared as high as 46 but that was in 2006 and it’s unlikely, they will relive those glory days anytime soon. In this competition, Togo have qualified eight times, first in 1972, with their best result in 2013 when making the quarter-final stage. They also made the World Cup group stages in 2006.

The Sparrowhawks were held to a 1-1 draw by Comoros in the World Cup and followed that with a deserved victory over the same opponent four days later, winning 2-0 to progress on aggregate. That was closer than many fans expected but it would have boosted squad confidence.

Uganda vs Togo prediction

Togo are the dominant team in this fixture and will be eager to continue their winning ways over Uganda, but they can’t afford to take their opponents lightly.

African Nations odds

Uganda are 2.12 to win with Togo 3.58 and the draw 2.8.
