Juventus will be looking to get back on track domestically this term after finishing down in seventh last season. They face a challenging assignment on matchday one this weekend, as they come up against an improving Udinese.
The 2022-23 season will be one that Juventus will be happy to forget about quickly. The Old Lady eventually finished the season in seventh after being docked points. Meanwhile, they will not be involved in European competition this term after being excluded due to a violation of FFP regulations.
However, despite all that, Juventus remain among the favourites to win the Serie A title this term. Massimiliano Allegri’s side have made just one noteworthy addition this term, with Timothy Weah joining the team from Lille. Juventus hold the record for the most wins on matchday one in Serie A history, as they have won 59 of their openers. That includes six victories in their previous seven matchday one fixtures in the Italian top-flight.
Udinese would have been happy enough with their performance last term, as they finished the 2022-23 season in 12th overall. They won eleven of their 38 matches, but they had clear limitations in the final third after netting just 47 times. That would be a key area where they would need to improve if they are to finish in the top half of the standings this term.
The Italian side have a poor recent record in the opening round of matches, as they have lost twice in the previous three seasons. However, their ability to comeback in matches was a huge trend last term, as only Bologna picked up more points from losing positions in the Italian top-flight.
The Old Lady haven’t lost in 14 of their previous 15 matches against Udinese. The only win for the hosts this weekend was recorded in July 2020. These two sides previous clashed on matchday one in 2021-22, with the teams playing out a 2-2 draw in Cristiano Ronaldo’s final game for Juventus.
Juventus will need to show that they are back on track after a dismal campaign last term this weekend. This will be a challenging fixture for the Old Lady, but we expect them to land maximum points by a one-goal margin on Sunday.
