Action in Group A in the Europa League resumes on Thursday, as one of the front-runners for qualification are on the road. Freiburg will be looking to bounce back following a recent defeat in the competition when they come up against Backa Topola.
Freiburg remain one of the favourites to progress out of Group A this season, but they will be looking to avoid dropping points for the second straight matchday. The German side were beaten by West Ham United in their previous fixture, but they remain in a prominent position after landing victory against Olympiacos on matchday one.
Backa Topola have struggled in the Europa League to this point, and they are likely in a battle for the second spot at best. They have failed to win across their opening two matches, but they did pick up a first Europa League point in their previous match in the competition against Olympiacos earlier this month.
TSC have already been involved in some thrilling European fixtures in front of their home fans, but they are without a victory in three matches. They have played out two draws over that period, and have suffered one defeat. However, their three European fixtures in Serbia have seen a staggering 21 goals scored, with TSC netting nine times and their opponents scoring on 12 occasions.
Freiburg suffered their first Europa League away defeat in October 2013 against Sevilla, but they have gone six without defeat in the group stage since that loss. Their most recent success was a 3-2 win in Greece against Olympiacos. Roland Sallai could be a player to watch for the visitors this weekend, as he has netted in each of the opening two matches in the competition.
This will be the first time that Topola have come up against a German opponent in a European competition. Meanwhile, it will also be the first time that Freiburg have clashed with a Serbian rival. In fact, this will only be the fourth meeting between German and Serbian sides in the group stage in the Europa League.
Topola have seen an average of seven goals per game scored across their three European home matches to date. Therefore, over 2.5 goals this week could be a standout selection. However, we find it challenging to overlook the Freiburg win, as they look like a solid chance to finish second in the Group A standings.
