The group stages of the Europa League get underway this week, and one of the favourites to win the competition this season will kick off with a home match. But, will Tottenham Hotspur be able to get off to the perfect start?
There would have been bitter feeling within the Tottenham Hotspur camp after their most recent game in the Premier League, as they squandered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with local rivals West Ham United. Spurs dominated throughout the match, and went into the break three goals ahead. Harry Kane scored a brace in the opening half, while Heung Min-Son also found the net. It seemed as though Spurs were edging towards a comfortable win as the scoreline was the same with ten minutes remaining.
However, West Ham produced an unlikely comeback, with Manuel Lanzini scoring the equaliser in the final minute of injury time. Jose Mourinho would have been left furious with his side’s sloppiness, as they missed a perfect chance to seal the win with ten minutes remaining but Gareth Bale fired wide on his first game back for Tottenham. Mourinho will be hoping for a more controlled performance in their Europa League opener.
LASK come into this game against Spurs having won last time out in the Austrian Cup against SV Worgi. It was a comfortable afternoon for them in that match, as they didn’t even need to get out of second gear to win the match. Johannes Eggestein scored the opening goal after 29 minutes, before Andreas Gruber and Peter Michori secured the win with two further strikes in injury time. However, this will be a much more difficult task for the Austrian side, as Tottenham’s strength in depth surpasses what they normally come up against.
Eric Dier will be missing once again for Tottenham, while Giovani Lo Celso is also a doubt. Gareth Bale could be handed a first Tottenham start since returning to the club in this fixture. Meanwhile, LASK have a fully fit squad to select from.
Tottenham should have way too much quality for LASK in this fixture, and they should get a comfortable win at home. Harry Kane will likely be rested, but Bale could have a huge role to play as he could be handed a first start since returning to the club.
